This is a fascinating podcast episode because I never thought Gwen Stefani was anything other than an utterly boring pretty white woman who is absolutely not progressive, feminist or anything other than another blonde tornado of cultural appropriation:

My first real boyfriend was a guy I dated during my junior year of college. He was tall, gorgeous and turned out to be an abusive asshole. “Junior Year” is the only song I’ve ever written about him but he emailed my band Ex-Boyfriends thinking all of our songs (I’m the drummer!) were about him 🙄🤣

I almost didn’t put “Suit” on the album. In my head, it’s a much longer song with a tonal shift in the second chorus or bridge or whatever, but I haven’t been able to get it out of my brain and onto my guitar/other instruments. But I think I captured the feeling of monotony I wanted it to have.

Had to cheat because I was 16 in 1989 and there were so many damn good albums that came out.

“Stung” is a song that was technically 21 years old when I recorded it. The quieter first half appeared in 1999 and I’d try to flesh it out every so often to no avail. It finally clicked in 2020 and became a snapshot of a period of intense desire and heartache over a wildly narcissistic guy 🐝

I also released a single version of “More” with my friend Tolliver adding gorgeous harmonies and backing vocals and taking the song to a whole other place with his voice. I’m going to link to his music in the comments - he’s so fantastic!!!

“More” was another song that just popped out really quickly as I played a repetition of chords. I tend to be pretty verbose with lyrics but every now and then they come out in a more simple, straightforward way. The trick here is it’s about many different people but mostly an inner monologue.

When I was recording ‘Some Bodies’ I wanted to layer in lots of percussion on most of the songs. I was listening to tons of early Bananarama, Fun Boy Three, Marine Girls and Throwing Muses and loved what they did with percussion. “Leona” is definitely indebted to TM/Kristin Hersh.

“One Tattoo” was a song that just fell out of my butt as I was playing back and forth from an A to a D chord one day. It’s about 2 lost loves (kind of) and one of them is one my friend and bandmate @localindy.bsky.social once said would only merit an instrumental 🤣 Fiddle by Claire Grinton!

“Carried Away” is the first song on ‘Some Bodies’ & it was originally inspired by a zip file labeled “I got carried away” full of album art ideas. It set my brain off with lyrical ideas and when it came time to record I wanted to cram it full of girl group references. See if you can hear them all!

Desperately want to make a cover of this for the cis gay guys that goes: 🎶 No more “gains,” no more “dad,” stop always saying “bro” and try therapy instead!🎵
