Absolutely not. Every time someone tries this, I point out how it biases against Black speech. Every. Time. 🤷🏿‍♂️ Also from the launch of the Perspective API and its "toxicity" score. Police don't kill too many Black kids." Score: Not toxic.🤦🏿‍♂️ "Police kill too many Black kids. Score: 80.28% toxic.😮

This sums up the problem I had after watching the new episodes last week. Let's see the nice kind men being empathetic and kind to people, then have a jolly song! The format makes me twitchy. Seeing more men being nice, kind and empathetic is good but it shouldn't feel like patronage.

Shed update. I still need to do 3 sides (one side needs 1 more coat, the last side needs 2 coats) plus the finicky stuff like window frames. I *massively* underestimated how thirsty for paint this shed was so the first coats have used way more paint than planned. Stopping for now. Midday sun.

I have tidied and cleaned the house downstairs, taken the pond filter apart and cleaned it, and am about to vacuum to the hall and stairs. After that i will have completed sufficient adulting for today.

How's this for a free bank holiday weekend read? In researching Burgh Island Hotel, I ended up with a brief overview of all the times film and tv drama has been shot on the island in #Devon. buttondown.com/WestCountryM...

Without being too po-faced about it on a day when it’s mainly all about the politics, councillors are corporate parents in control of billion pound budgets with statutory safeguarding responsibilities. This is serious stuff, much more so in terms of direct responsibility than being an MP.

Good morning from the south west.

Okay friends. Today I am writing a thread that I have been thinking about for a long, long, long time. It's really, really important. It is also very heavy. Cis people, read this. Look with your eyes open at it. Sit with it. Feel it. Absorb it. Trans people, take care. This is about history. 🧵

I ended up accidentally writing an entire post on the limits to "harm reduction" voting and why I don't believe it's the appropriate response to Starmer's Labour Party, even in the face of Reform.

When I volunteered for a women's centre, the question of "what if a rape crisis caller doesn't want to talk to a trans volunteer?" came up and was settled with "they can ask to talk to a different volunteer, no questions asked," which was the usual procedure. IIRC it never came up in practice.

This data vis elides the fact that the Greens now have 6 seats on DCC. That's up from 2 from 2021, and only 1 less than the Conservatives total this year. Labour only had 7 seats to start with. Merging the 6 Green seats with the 2 INDs as "Other" is not really providing a meaningful graph.

It’s also great when you realise you need an extra character in your story to make it work. Off to find a name for them that sounds a) plausible for someone their age b) sufficiently different to all the other names so it’s not confusing.

DCC have put up a live map of the results as they come in. Good visualization work from the web team there. www.devon.gov.uk/democracy/ma...

Right. That's it. Next time it's my pick for family film night, I'm picking Master and Commander.

The BBC: "Come and watch Doctor Who at the cinema!" The cinema:

Someone should write a book about all the various professions through history that were done primarily by women because they were looked down on as unglamorous and unfulfilling until men figured out there was power and money in these professions and pushed women out.

Me: I'll use some of the skills from my History of Art, Design and Film degree by creating a newsletter about C20 architecture in the west country. Also me: I just found all this film history at one of the buildings. Now free to read over at west country modernism.
