Why do people in elevators ask which floor you’re going it’s less energy to push the button than to talk

Looks like the Kakeya conjecture has been settled in three dimensions: arxiv.org/pdf/2502.17655

How come companies aren't allowed to become too large/monopolies but political parties are? The dangers of the latter is even much greater as it can turn a democracy into a dictatorship, much like the way the US is currently headed to.

Hochul’s move here is profoundly racist and dehumanizing. Defining Palestinian studies as fundamentally antisemitic means defining Palestinians as something to be erased. It is genocidal. This is also an unacceptable attack on academic freedom. The governor should have no say in faculty hiring.

Even Iran didn’t vote in favor of Russia here. But the US and Israel did:

I find that Threads is showing a much more engaging and interesting timeline than BlueSky. Anybody else observes this?

Replacing "I hope this email finds you well" with "Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation." in all emails from now on.

What is a 20+ year old paper that you think everyone should read? and why? Mine is easy. It is Shannon's 1948 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐓𝐡𝐞𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. It led to widespread adoption of probabilistic modeling of language, sth we take for granted today. If you think about it, it is not trivial at all!

Dear artists, comedians, and satirists: None of us can do the work we're doing without y'all helping to keep us sane. Please keep bringing the laughter amidst the pain. I am so grateful to you.

The AMS is temporarily opening its career services to all who need them, regardless of membership status, and offering dues waivers and meeting registration fee reductions for those impacted by job loss due to changes in the government. Read more: bit.ly/4gRiHAk

🚨BREAKING: Federal Court GRANTS sweeping nationwide injunction against Trump DEI executive orders finding that they violate First and Fifth Amendments to the Constitution. A huge victory for @democracyforward.org and its clients. A stinging loss for Trump. Visit www.democracydocket.com for details.

The University of Pittsburgh confirmed Friday that there would be no new Ph.D. offers of admission while Pitt works to understand how reduced federal aid could impact the institution.

Amazing result! There seems to be an upcoming IAS seminar for this broadcast over Zoom: www.ias.edu/math/events/...

This is all kinds of nuts. Wow!

This is terrible news, and part of the ongoing assault on science in the U.S. by the new administration. To honor Tracy Kimbrel and his service to the NSF's AF division, here's a short thread about a beautiful algorithm of his, joint with Rakesh Sinha (www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...). 1/

NSF staff directory seems to be completely gone: www.nsf.gov/nsb/about/st...

In the late 2000s, computer scientist Stephen Cook (left) bet $100 that it was impossible to use the same piece of memory for storage and calculations simultaneously. In 2020, his own son (right) proved him wrong — and collected the cash. https://buff.ly/4i6G7Tz

This seems to also include Tracy Kimbrel who served as a program manager for essentially all theoretical computer science for about 15 years :( Totally outrageous.

Can others also reproduce this? Seems very concerning: - Create a new account on X. - Be sure to specify neutral interests, eg. only follow @X when asked to follow at least one account. - Timeline is already filled with MAGA propaganda (& not just coming from Elon Musk). Quit X & burn it with fire!!

What I find more interesting is the fact that MapQuest is still a thing!
