Folks who know I like to grow stuff gave me a bunch of random veg seedlings a few months back, mostly tomatoes. Here’s today’s harvest. Was glad they were ok after last night, when we got down to about 5 degrees. Bizarre for February.

It's that time, yes, that time I come and ask if you've done 1 thing to materially build power and develop mutual aid today? Tired of reskeeting that thread, I've turned it into a post on @caw-shinythings.bsky.social, and thrown in links to other projects, zines and how-tos! One Step! Every Day!

"Appeasement at Munich: World Wars, Past and Possible" The symmetry between Germany-Czechoslovakia in 1938 and Russia-Ukraine in 2022 is uncanny, and pausing for a moment on the resemblances might help us to take a broader view of today. snyder.substack.com/p/appeasemen...

Do not obey in advance

Honestly, the way my week has been going, an asteroid strike would be a blessed relief

Ugh. I really wanted to share this song, and had a choice between a Facebook link and a crappy YouTube link. I know it's come up looking dodgy, but it's worth a click through. Grace Petrie and Ben Moss playing The Losing Side. 2025 vibes.

Let there be a story Let there be a song Let there be a poem They need not be long Let there be some baking A giving of the grain Let there be a lighting Of one small candle-flame Seize the chance to celebrate Whenever life allows Tomorrow is not promised & The time for joy is now. #Imbolc #poetry

This is a scary time, but also one where people across divisions could in theory link up and offer real solidarity and support to each other. We have a choice - allow different groups of people to be targeted, or show up and stand with everyone under attack.

Spotted this gorgeous little katydid on the storage shed this morning. What a cutie!

I haven’t read any horror novels in a very long time. This was a Reddit recommendation, and my god, it’s a cracker of a read. Modern gothic, I guess, if I had to categorise it, with a touch of Lovecraft. And a wild twist at the end. I’ll be putting more of John Langan’s books of my must-read list.

This Wendell Berry poem feels appropriate for today.

This smol friend was hiding from the heat in our hazelnut bushes. They're a southern brown tree frog - Litoria ewingii. We have a large pond/small dam which is absolutely alive with frogs, and it's one of the joys of living here. Yes, it's a crap photo but I didn't want to disturb my little mate.

The earliest apple in our orchard is Beauty of Bath. It has a very narrow picking window before it ends up floury, but what it might lack in flavour, it certainly makes up for in looks. The colour of the fruit is positively luminous.

“Alternative medicine has become a trillion dollar, scrutiny-free wonderland for anything and everything.” This is a long article – actually an excerpt from a book - with much commentary on the industry. Well worth it, though." (From Oz Skeptic). thewalrus.ca/wellness-ind...

We're going to get our first crop of almonds this year - only a couple of handfuls, but given the struggle I've had keeping our almond trees alive, I'm very excited. This tree is just the basic common All-In-One variety. I'm still waiting for my fancy, expensive heritage varieties to do their thing.

This gorgeous little book had me pacing the bedroom, waving my arms around, while trying to explain to my husband how the flow of materials and energy in nature can inspire us to build a better, more generous, regenerative human economy. It’s beautifully written, uplifting, and makes so much sense.
