Cancelled my Adobe Photoshop subscription, was going to keep the Premiere sub a little longer, but they had the cheek to charge me a $70 fee to cancel, so I cancelled everything else too. Not many subs left now!

After this week's troubling police raid, Gandalf the green fairy is facing a mountain of costs. He's built a decent life over the years on his little patch of land, but he's not a wealthy man. You can help out here if you like. givealittle.co.nz/cause/gandal...

I am absolutely appalled by the disrespect shown towards Zelensky, the shocking behavior by all of those representing the US in that room. The world will never forget this.

I've been in Washington for 32 years. I have often disagreed with U.S. administrations. But this is the first time in all that time that I believe the U.S. government is an enemy of the people of the United States and our allies.

My weather maps still work for now, I still use them to know where to surf, but I suspect the US govt will soon stop supplying the free model data at some point. majicweather.com

The People's Union USA, a grassroots group, is calling on Americans to join a national boycott by not shopping for 24 hours on Friday.

Today’s harvest 🌱

Destroying buckets, droplets, deleting accounts… weee!!! Fuck you Amazon, I’m out!!

Cancelled spotify yesterday, will be cancelling the video streaming services today. For video I plan to rotate a single active sub, using free plans where possible. My goal isn’t to save money, it’s to avoid giving it to assholes.

I think it’s the cognitive load that has made us all stupid. We’re still just as smart, really, but modern life has too much overhead. Most of our daily mental capacity is burned just keeping our feet on the pedals, there is nothing left for the important things.

I’m aiming to be iPhone and subscription free within a year or two, and music is a major issue. Heading back towards early 2000s era NAS based mp3 storage/players, so I’ve started with setting up a raspberry pi NAS.

Being intimately familiar with technical debt, I can say with confidence that the world is drowning in it. We are not capable of maintaining or replacing what we have, and it will continue to get worse.

Yep, this is clearly what’s going on here. We have a toddler at the grownups table.

It’s interesting how when we scale up from individuals to large populations, we combine to form a giant average version of ourselves, filled with all the same irrational fears and anger. More of us doesn’t make us smarter, our emotions still win.

Bouncing between “hmm if the world order collapses, the internet cable might get cut, my business might evaporate” and “That tree could use a trim. What will I need to pack for my surf boat trip in August”

View from the cliff tops yesterday. Love the way the lines flow through into the distant cliffs.

I reckon there is a decent chance we’re all gonna have to move our data off cloud storage soon, if we ever want to see it again. Good excuse to set up a new home server, thinking I’ll use a raspberry pi and some USB drives.

It peels off really easily 👍

Cancelled a couple more subscriptions, making more plans to be self sufficient, to reduce the need to earn and spend money. There are so many good reasons to do this, now more than ever. I regret wasting so much.

Bought a toaster. Turns out it was made in US, and now the toast has a bad musk, tastes like authoritarianism.

Garden progress update! zucchinis every day, giant green capsicums, hundreds of chillis, a few fattening watermelons, and the dahlias and cosmos drawing your attention away from the sparrow-ransacked oats. Happy summer days! 🌱

In NZ we still can’t grow our own prescribed medicine. Why do we force patients to pay so much, and exclude those who can’t pay, when they could get their medicine for free? www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/3605...

The watermelons are starting to fatten up, they were sown late, but hopefully we have enough summer left! This one is a bit larger than a tennis ball

Good score!

Starting to think about how I can sell my games without going through a US based store.

A couple of beaches from the past week. Bay of Plenty has been wonderful, as always ❤️

Dahlias fresh from the garden 😍🌱

Body surfing is one of my favorite things in the world. No fins or boards, just me and the ocean. Dancing in the waves.

This succulent is up to something 🌱

Hear me out: you take the hard-won products of journalism, science, art and creativity, you use vast amounts of electrical energy during a time-sensitive energy transition to re-jumble the words and sentences, and then you present the outputs as being better and more trustworthy than the original

“The global average of time spent on screen time is 6 hours and 57 minutes.” Well there’s your problem, everybody. earthweb.com/blog/screen-...

Saw a visitor I had not seen before in the garden today, it hovered and darted around like a dragon fly. Found out it is an introduced wool carder bee, first seen in NZ in 2006.

I am trying to change my behavior to vote with my wallet. I figure if you spend money with care, buy from real people and local/green businesses, it does more good before it eventually finds its way to the oligarchs and oil barons. It is really fucking hard to do though, we are so terribly trapped.

It took a year, but I have successfully resurrected the lockdown garden! 🌱

Pretty happy with this one, nice and easy too!
