The amount of sea ice currently on our planet continues to set new record lows for this time of year... More visuals at zacklabe.com/global-sea-i.... Data from @nsidc.bsky.social for the satellite-era period.

@bhensonweather.bsky.social and I on major damage occurring to science: "Large cuts at NIH and the National Science Foundation would devastate U.S. higher education, forcing thousands of layoffs and ending the education of thousands of graduate students." yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/02/cuts...

Records are so easily reached these days. Norderney tied its monthly record of 15.3°C today, originally set on February 27th 2019. Records since 1897.

Central America is also living a very hot month, specially Guatemala and Honduras with records broken nearly every day. The Guatemalan capital at 1500m asl had a Tmin of 17.3C tying the highest February min on record. In the area this month is nearly 1C hotter than February 2024.

EXCEPTIONAL WINTER HEAT IN THAILAND After the 40C Tmaxes ,there are stifling hot and humid nights with minimums up to 27.5C in Bangkok, near the February hottest nights ever recorded in Asia and it will get hotter Phuket hasn't recorded a single colder than average day in months

Sea ice in the Arctic and around Antarctica cool our climate, drive ocean circulation across the planet, and provide a unique habitat for polar ecosystems. Sea ice amounts have now fallen to their lowest since we started measuring them. This is not good. 🌊🥼❄️🧪 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Global sea ice extent continues to extend its record low. 🧪 #GreenSky

I am simply in aw at the spectacle that #Zelia is putting on right now. That deep circular CDO and the pinhole eye rapidly taking shape are the hallmarks of a storm that means bussiness. When this thing makes landfall, the unforgiving wrath of mother nature will be put on full display. #tropicswx

HISTORIC DAY IN AUSTRALIA Both South Australia and Queensland had their February hottest day in history with 48.7C at Oodnadatta and 47.5C at Birdsville. Records are being brutalized allover Oceania and SE Asia. More updates coming...

The extent of sea ice globally is now at an absolute record low level for the entire satellite-era. [Graphics: zacklabe.com/global-sea-i.... Note: the poles are affected by very different Earth system processes/seasonality. I am using 5-day running mean data.]

The GEM with a very cold run for our parts. Very unlikely to be this cold, but it looks increasingly likely that this month will turn cold and finally end the above average monthly streak (compared to 91-20 mean) that was going on since June 2023. Going by 61-90 mean it was September 2021.

The magnitude of the current size of the #Arctic sea ice extent anomaly is unheard of in the satellite-era record for the deep winter season months. Data from nsidc.org/data/seaice_...

The first crocuses are budding here in Hamburg. Pretty early again...

New year, same warming climate. Despite La Niña global temperatures are currently the warmest on record for the time of year and have been all month. It’s likely January 2025 will be the warmest January on record, globally. Beating the previous record set just last year 📈

The World Weather Attribution group studied the devastating L.A. wildfires, concluding that human-caused climate change led to a 35% increase in their probability. Climate change could not be blamed for the Santa Ana winds, though. yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/01/clim...

My post yesterday, yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/01/the-..., discussed how 3 of the top-20 costliest weather disasters in world history occurred in 2024.
