Regarding the admin’s abandonment of Ukraine and longstanding U.S. double standards on Palestine: I’ve been thinking more about Martha Finnemore’s point that hypocrisy at least gives others leverage on a state. With no articulated values whatsoever, there’s no hypocrisy—but also fewer constraints.

A thought I just had that probably a million people have already articulated on here: pessimism about what’s possible in terms of resistance introduces its own confirmation bias.

Lu Xun had an essay arguing against the popular saying “don’t beat dogs who have fallen into the water,” which was used at the time in a “let bygones be bygones” way with respect to overthrown tyrants. No, he said, wade in after them and keep beating.

The union representing thousands of janitors said ICE went to multiple downtown San Francisco offices but that building security kept them from entering, KTVU reports. “Union president Olga Miranda said the janitors were relieved that someone spoke up for them.” www.ktvu.com/news/ice-age...

I agree about the general stupidness of the switch to Xiaohongshu. But if it gets some tankies and China hawks alike to engage / confront the PRC in all its capitalist messiness, rather than as some abstract stand-in for all that is not America, then maybe there’s a little bit of a silver lining?

Oh yeah, that’s totally all happening! Or at least the pardons will, I guess. Interesting that healthcare is in the mix.

Re-upping this request for suggestions now that Bluesky has mushroomed.

We’ll know better what did / did not work with the campaign as more data comes in. But #6 in Bill Fletcher’s (not on Bluesky?) list of suggestions going forward is essential regardless. inthesetimes.com/article/trum...

Annals of Canadian capitalism: my kids got an early 2000s Monopoly board at a yard sale with an electronic credit card reader, Segways, flip phones, rollerblades, the Edmonton mall, and Parliament hill. You can also buy “the internet” for 1.5 million.

Losing my mind at my friend's video on a strike line of ILA members breaking out into Queen's "We are the champions" after finding out they won a raise. 😭😭❤️❤️

Haven’t been posting often. But… with so little time until innocent #MarcellusWilliams is set to be executed tomorrow, Sept. 24th at 6 p.m., we must make as much noise as possible. Please, email, tweet or call Gov. Parson at 417-373-3400 and URGE him to step in. innocenceproject.org/petitions/ca...

Every day I buy a can of pineapple with an expiration date of May 1 because May loves pineapple and May 1 is my birthday. I tell myself that if she doesn’t come back by the time I’ve bought 30 cans, then our love will expire too Chungking Express 重慶森林 dir. Wong Kar Wai

Wow! It’s happened!

Any suggestions about a good, fairly recent gender and politics textbook for first- or second-year undergrads? I'm thinking about how to overhaul my introduction to comparative politics course (largely as a means of procrastinating on grading). #polisky

Great #AAS2024 haul.
