Helpful blog in case anyone is contending with the current situation in the information landscape.

Since I've had a few folks ask: I don't have any insider info on what's going on with PubMed or other NIH sites the last few days. Keep an eye on the #medlibs tag. And I'll share if I DO hear anything.

Yes, we've been telling you

Mood: 📚

One of my best friends is from a sleepy, wealthy small town in the south-west of Germany. He said, so many of my parents’ neighbours are rich and bored, with little to complain about, and they’ve radicalised themselves at dinner parties and online. In their aimlessness, they’ve bonded over hate.

Nazi punks fuck off for sure but I'd love for nazis who like other types of music and ones who don't like music at all to also fuck off

Cannot recommend QLL enough! It's really easy to sign up and access via Libby.

Banning porn (with the definition of porn left vague and open on purpose) is always about carving out exemptions to the first amendment. One you've got exceptions, it's easy to make more and more and more.

On Friday, hundreds of transgender and queer New Yorkers and their allies gathered outside the Stonewall Inn to declare that a brazen act of historical revisionism from the Trump administration would not stand. Here's what I saw and heard over about 10 interviews: www.huffpost.com/entry/stonew...

Forgotten to get a card for tomorrow? Don't worry, the library team are always here to support you.

I really really need you guys to make a conscious rejection of generative AI tools part of your ongoing political resistance. Don't use ChatGPT. Turn off Gemini. Don't read the AI results forced upon you at the top of Google search. Don't use AI art generators or support anyone who does. Please.

Sit down, kid I just want to talk about why you think wires are better than the stuff in your skull. I need you to listen when I tell you that: you? You are more powerful than cold jumbled languauge trickled in the most likely order. You are more than probablity you're possibility.

I love flipping back and forth between these two illustrations, seeing how the characters have aged.

When the Patriot Act was passed, libraries got requests for patrons’ borrowing history. We were prohibited from disclosing those requests. We deleted and shredded those records and stopped tracking reading history for that reason. ALSO.

I'm so sorry I can't stop laughing. OpenAI, the company built on stealing literally the entire internet, is crying because DeepSeek may have trained on the outputs from ChatGPT. They're crying their eyes out. What a bunch of hypocritical little babies. Cry more, freaks. www.ft.com/content/a0df...

OpenAI being upset that someone used their work without permission, payment, or attribution is an interesting turn of events.

Libraries as they try and embrace gen AI

Cass Review. New article in the New England Journal of Medicine, founded in 1812 and amongst the most prestigious peer-reviewed medical journals. Its 2023 impact factor was 96.2, ranking it 2nd out of 168 journals in the category "Medicine, General & Internal".

I have taken the resources that were in the budget and which you were probably saving for higher education Forgive me they were needed to feed the AI bubble and to dismantle the humanities

"They say I died a virgin, but then they say every martyred woman was a virgin. I want" From 'The Vanishing Song'

Search engines exist. Calendars and reminders are already on your phone and email client. No one needs to use immense amounts of energy and water and stolen IP to make a worse version!

I really, really want news outlets to stop giving me "breaking news" alerts about rich people's opinions.

"Prompt Engineers" swear they are doing something b/c they had A Thought. But you fools. You bores. You absolute fucking turnips. The Art isn't the Thought, the Idea. The Art is The Work. And this isn't some art hoe bullshit, this is about craft.

Leaving a bag of monopoly money near your murder scene and watching the cops fail to find it for three whole days while following an unrelated bike is what being a D&D DM is like

“I realise now that sending an email after 10pm - particularly after a glass of red wine - is NOT a good idea. Furthermore, the next time I even think about declaring Martial Law, I will create a draft and see how I feel in the morning.”

Only you can prevent you from becoming Reviewer 2.

Korea Expert here. I’ll explain what’s going on over there because the Orient can be confusing to Westerners. In Korea, there is a concept known as “the law.” (법) This is a set of rules which are enforced to encourage prosocial behavior and ensure stability which leaders aren’t allowed to break.

Don’t get me wrong, the Christmas tree in our living room is lovely. ❤ But what’s lovely for one family might be too much for another. The only way of "getting it wrong" is by trying to emulate another person’s version of lovely instead of what works in your specific house.

Yeah I love MILFs Middle class women of a certain age Initiating Legal Filings against Gregg Wallace

Look at how glorious these are!! (Click the video to see their full glory!)

the only thing shittier than AI is not letting people use the fucking bathroom

A man will literally start a global library association to harass librarians instead of going to therapy.

The Onion should buy Elsevier next

Recently someone asked me why I don't just say "halloween" when referring to today, and I thought about it too much. This poem's called Turnip.

All writing advice is basically an attempt to speedrun "Read good books and think really hard about how they work," so if you can't do workshops and all that, you can still go back to reading good books and thinking really hard about how they work.

Me: Time to study My cat: What if I licked myself So Loudly?

Reflecting on the poem I have written for this year's Celebration of Poetry and realising it's definitely for two people to read... sadly for everyone listening it's going to be me and myself.
