A common color of the marsh tacky is bay dun which is A bay horse with a dun gene. All have the dorsal stripe down the back but not all have the primitive markings such as baring on the legs, cobwebbing on face, cross bars on shoulders. They can vary is shade from light tan to darker brown coat.

A common physical trait of marsh tacky horses is the double mane, where the mane falls on both sides of the horses neck in a layered fullness usually laced with multiple colored highlights. Most horses mane fall one side or the other( most desirable is to fall on the right side of the neck)

Traits of a Marsh Tacky- Tackies are considered gentle, intelligent and brave. They were trusted enough to carry kids to school and plow fields while tough enough to hunt hogs and drag deer after a long day of hunting. Their inquisitive nature also makes them fun to be around and easy to train.
