Will CARS Spell the Death of Birmingham City Centre? (BBC, 1964) I'm afraid it did. Birmingham planners bet big on cars in the 1960s, reshaping the city around traffic flow—not people. The result? A hollowed-out centre, struggling retail, and urban decline. www.youtube.com/watch?v=d41L...

The entire argument summed up in just one simple exchange.

Travelling all around England this month. Can’t help but notice a huge increase in these in lots of cities. In this case, taking up 2/3 of the footway on a very busy pedestrian route between Manchester Piccadilly and Oxford Road. Is this a good thing for enabling walking?

*Niche GIS/football joke* Ezri Konsa implies the existence of a Spectrum Konsa as well.

I'm deeply saddened to share that Donald Shoup passed away last night. He was the ideal academic—curious, methodical, and concerned with turning ideas into real-world change. TAing his parking course these past few years has one of the greatest honors of my life. Rest in peace, Shoup Dogg.

The lengths to which the American press is going to describe Donald Trump's Gaza plan in every other way but as ethnic cleansing is quite something

"But my caaaaaar..." wankers strike again. I walk the dogs through this cemetery. I've seen people driving on the pathways. I've shouted at someone trying to do so. Imagine driving over a grave to save 10 mins travel time. Pricks.

Greater Manchester, look at what you could have had. You know, rather than the worst air pollution in the country.

Hey Bluesky! I’m here. Yes, I’m still a bit stunned by my prescient tweet (below) 14hrs before the tragic DC crash, after which many of you encouraged me to finally gravitate to here. Happy to belatedly join the community. Tom

Absolutely spot on from Rory Stewart

What a performance from spurs in their cup final 🙄

That really is quite the headline, from the pretty right-wing Wall Street Journal.

Man City’s women’s team’s ground is called Joie Stadium. How cringe. You’d never find a men’s team playing at a stadium with a stereotypically blokey sponsor like Banks’s Beers or Bet365.

This is amazing re: 20mph impact in Wales - collisions on Welsh roads at their lowest level for that quarter since records began, and 100 fewer people killed on 20mph and 30mph roads. That's 100 people alive today who potentially wouldn't otherwise be here...

I’m going to call Cycleways Alpha Lanes from now on. So enjoyable beating all those Beta Snowflakes in their cars because they don’t like the rain or cold.

TfL is the longest lived London transport authority now by some margin. London Passenger Transport Board (15 years) London Transport Executive (14 years) London Transport Board (6 years) Greater London Council (14 years) London Regional Transport (16 years)

This “no one uses the cycle lanes” comment that goes unchecked is exactly why we installed detailed monitoring systems on schemes. A quick glance at the open data shows that 2,197 trips were made on Binley cycleway last week, in the middle of winter. www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/news-op...

I realize now that I have a “trade deficit” with the store across the street. I walked over and bought a jug of milk. The store is abusing me and I’m tired of subsidizing it by buying something at a fair price that I want. I’m going to apply a tariff that will raise the future price of milk for me.

If you see this post, quote with a bridge from your gallery.

NEW: There's been a 51-percent drop in injuries an a 55-percent drop in crashes year-over-year within the congestion relief zone in just the first 12 days of the program. nyc.streetsblog.org/2025/01/23/c...

FFS, this is why people don’t want to use buses. Sort. It. Out.

The economically minded of us recognise a Kondratieff wave when they see one. That is why I am always pushing back.

“…the measures required to deal with the full potential amounts of motor traffic in big cities are so formidable that society will have to ask itself seriously how far it is prepared to go with the motor vehicle.” https://buff.ly/3PKjMz2

Happy “Blue Monday is not a thing, it was invented for a travel agent to sell holidays” eve everybody.

When I was just a little girl I asked my mother, what will I be Will I be pretty? Will I be rich? Here's what she said to me: No.

Jeepers Creepers

Conservatives are the real snowflakes

Air pollution has dropped significantly in #Paris in the last 15 years. Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social’s leadership has traded car space for green space, safe bike space, kid space.. and traded pollution for people. Good trade.

Of course, the real question here is "Why on earth are cyclists being expected to share space with pedestrians?" We're not having a chat about how people in cars have to slow down and give a little toot as they squeeze past pedestrians, are we?

Unbelievable numbers.

If Labour are struggling to grow the economy, building public transport infrastructure always works. They should try doing it outside of London where the productivity gains will be significantly higher and the costs significantly cheaper.
