Add this to the dumpster fire week of trying to cancel congestion pricing and "reviewing" spending at California High Speed Rail, for the transportation crowd.

Sneckdown season

This week in 'Urban Sensing' - air pollution! Massive public health crisis that we can map/track in all kinds of ways, including via satellites (nitrogen dioxide over in the Denver region):

As I told @henrygrabar.bsky.social , Trump’s attack on congestion pricing is special: “‘Compared to other [Trump Administration actions], this particular action is surprisingly unjustified…. It’s a complete fabrication devoid of any support in the statutes.” slate.com/business/202...

Following a loud public outcry about job cuts at the National Parks Service — and a relentless media campaign from outdoors enthusiasts across the country — it looks like the Trump administration has blinked. via @jackdolan.bsky.social

Marin County is forecast to lose (i.e. price out) over 20k people in the decade between 2019 and 2028. That's an 8% decrease. In the last 10 years, a 2 BR home in San Rafael has nearly doubled in price! I think the two may be related!

Thought this was a bus stop at first – actually covered Bike parking. Long Island City.

"NJ Transit Is Ruining My Life." The heavily used commuter system is crumbling due to lack of funds. www.bloomberg.com/features/202... Instead of joining Trump to fight Congestion pricing, @govmurphy.bsky.social should be working with NY to get a fair share of funds to restore NJ Transit!

It's really important to understand that for this crowd, there is no such thing as good public transit. This political movement views transit as *inherently* unsuitable and beneath them. Evidence, data, logic won't move them.

Living in a stable democracy for most of your life can leave you with an impoverished imagination about how bad things can get.

The people running the federal government hate New York City and want to punish people who live here for (by and large) having views and living lives that they dislike. Any gussied-up justification is working backwards from that desired result

From the Governor:

Thriving academic/scientific communities require funding. If grants become scarce, researchers look elsewhere to keep doing the work they care about. We're incredibly spoiled in the US to have world-leading funding (NIH, NSF at the top). But we could lose our edge in an instant.

A disaster for New York City: The federal government is pulling approval for the city's congestion pricing program, despite the fact that it: —Has successfully reduced congestion & pollution —Is supported by NYCers —Is providing essential funding to support transit improvements

The program has been running well, travel times are down for drivers, so of course they want to kill it: www.transportation.gov/briefing-roo...

Canadian government expected to announce plans for Toronto–Montréal–Québec City high-speed rail tomorrow: www.thestar.com/politics/fed... A very promising project that compares well with high-speed lines in Europe in terms of distance between major cities: www.urban.org/research/pub...

Brooklyn Heights

The amount of *drivers* I've spoken to who already are raving about the time savings from Congestion Pricing is a crucial part of its early success.

Still looking good!

“The first three months of electric [Caltrain] service saw a 41% in ridership over the same three months in 2023, with Sunday ridership doubling.” I’d also like to know how their operating expenses and farebox recovery ratio have changed. www.caltrain.com/news/end-202...

Honestly incredible how awful this headline is regarding Adams and DOJ. How could this ever be the version that goes live?

Absolutely brutal to see the stream of competent, experienced government employees be summarily fired by this administration. Leaves us weaker and less competitive globally.

This is why housing affordability (i.e. zoning reform) is the whole game. You can't attract anyone to your state when buying a home is out of reach for the average worker.
