A concise and very astute piece on autonomous systems in the maritime domain: 'By shortening the observe-orient-decide-act loop, the tempo of combat becomes faster; by lowering the threshold for recourse to violence, opportunities for action are more frequent, ' www.usni.org/magazines/pr...

A French Navy @marinenationale.bsky.social Rafale Marine fired a Meteor long range air-to-air missile. The firing, which took place on 18 June, was the first one conducted from an aircraft belonging to an operational airwing: Flottille 11F 🇫🇷 www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2...

Hollywood monster or vital ecosystem manager? For 50 years, Jaws has shaped our view of sharks. But this stunning photo, "Picking Through the Bones," shows their true, vital role. Daniel Browne captured over 100 sharks performing a clean-up of a whale carcass at Ningaloo Reef. #Sharks

So about that base security issue and FPV drone strikes from the other week.... An incursion enabling demonstrators to get onto the ramp and physically engaged with aircraft, even if it is Voyager - it's a tanker so a strategic enabler - is suboptimal. www.bbc.com/news/article...

The future of AEW does seem to be in uncrewed or leanly crewed aircraft at best (or space in the US case). Using UAVs as a sensor truck streaming data to ops centres makes sense. The article expands on the Reaper based option for the RN as a long term AEW replacement. www.twz.com/air/mq-9b-ai...

Because of [waves hands at the state of the world] there's been a bit of discussion about how difficult it is to sink oil tankers. As this account firmly approves of the empirical method, ie the boffin lingo for fucking around and finding out, let's look at an example. Meet Torrey Canyon.

With a backlog of 23 boats the situation regarding the scrapping of decommissioned RN nuclear submarines was suboptimal, so seeing the process finally start is good. www.twz.com/air/a-royal-...

'On the first night of the offensive against Iran, Israel had 220 combat aircraft in action. By way of comparison, opening Nato strikes against Colonel Ghaddafi’s Libya in 2011, the Royal Air Force managed six strike planes, two of which went unserviceable en route.' Well worth reading.

The UK Royal Navy has confirmed that its carrier-borne Crowsnest airborne surveillance and control (ASaC) role fit system has reached Full Operating Capability (FOC) 🇬🇧 www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2...

This is a thought-provoking post that aligns with what I’ve seen. AI can accelerate the exploration of software solutions and create more options for the Navy and other organizations. The right guardrails have to be in place, but there is a lot of potential.

In addition to the other excellent suggestions, I would start with CRS's Rob O'Rourke's devastating testimony here: armedservices.house.gov/uploadedfile...

#SDR2025 slipping in that the UK should look to invest in terrestrial and co-orbital counter space systems.. How to fund and develop the capability after the submarine programme, GCAP, BMD? Given the threat and character of the UK economy & military power conceptually sensible if unrealistic ATM.

During WW2, the OSS developed an unmanned vessel guided by a plane to destroy Japanese ships, bridges, and tunnels. It was later cited in a GWOT terrorist's legal defense: Project Javaman claudeberube.substack.com/p/project-ja...

A 40ft shipping container filled with similar UAVs would wreak havoc on a port or naval base. And if you haven't already got the plans and means to defend against it you are behind the curve. The cost to engineer such a strike from the blue is below a salvo of AShM. news.sky.com/story/specia...

12 SSNs is a figure more aligned to strategic requirements than the current force. Even with more in built automation the crew requirements for such a force is though likely beyond what the existing fleet structure and personnel situation could provide for. Given the www.bbc.com/news/article...

Very pleased to contribute to this #BigAsk. We need a free and open Arctic, not a fiefdom of revisionist states.

I'll add a few additional thoughts on the subject from Alan Zimm here that we didn't get to in the video. As I note, Zimm goes into great detail on weapon-target pairings in a hypothetical third wave. There simply wasn't enough ordinance to do everything. It's not a realistic critique.

IWM interviewed Swordfish pilot John Moffat in 2008. He recalled: 'Just then a voice says to me "Not yet John!" I thought 'where's that come from?' So I grabbed my [speaking] tube; 'What's wrong?'... A thread... 🧵
