Congratulations to Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and great news for Geneva, NY too! youtu.be/RBWZi2UTNnM?...

I just realized I've been writing 2024 on a lot of things, including a check! Anyone else? A sign of need for retreat? Or just brain overload.

The need to transform American education predates the nihilism of the current administration -- and the window is closing to address these challenges with the respect, appreciation, and affection that our universities deserve. Thanks to co-author Jeffrey Selingo. www.bostonglobe.com/2025/02/17/o...

Do you follow any bookstores or libraries in other states? I do, especially if I've been there while traveling or know people who work there. Wallingford Public Library is one, and I attend some of their programs by Zoom. 👇

The decline in the number of high school graduates will vary dramatically BY STATE. See the map in this piece: www.highereddive.com/news/decline... Some states will have increases, so each college will be impacted differently.

In contrast to a much-discussed decline, the increase in first-year students may have been as high as 5%, based on the number receiving federal aid. The National Student Clearinghouse will release a new report on Jan. 23.

The word of the moment seems to be AGENCY, as in personal agency or autonomy. I'm seeing it often, especially in newsletters today. @annhandley.bsky.social included agency in her list of "in" concepts, and @annehelen.bsky.social shared this op-ed: www.nytimes.com/2025/01/02/o...

My favorite reads of 2024: Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart The Summer Before the War by Helen Simonson Irma Voth by Miriam Toews Rules of Civility by Amor Towles Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

A highlight of 2024 was joining a book group. Wonderful people, and it made me more intentional about reading… I read TWICE as many books in 2024 compared to 2023. From 15 to 30 books. 11 for book group, the rest for me, work, and general curiosity.

Today's been half work, half personal, with steady snow setting the mood. Wishing everyone safe and healthy holidays ☃️

Who's most likely to upgrade to a paid newsletter subscription? Someone who just paid for a newsletter. Clever promotion by Substack. It listed 6 newsletters to which I'm a free subscriber. I wonder if those writers agreed to be in this offer, and if Substack is subsidizing the discount.

The campus and buildings of the College of Saint Rose, in Albany, NY have sold.

This short episode from @jayacunzo.com is a great guide to identifying your superpower. It's probably hiding in plain sight, so asking yourself these two questions will save you hours of ruminating. I also love the advice to aim for resonance instead of reach.

"Some young people say even their families don’t fully understand what they’re going through because applying to college is unrecognizable from what their parents experienced decades ago."

Get beyond the headlines about the 5% drop in first-year college enrollment (18-year-olds) in Jeff Selingo's analysis. The types of students with the biggest decreases in college-going will surprise you: bit.ly/NextNewslett... Fresh reporting for his new book provides insights on the reasons.

Spotted a roadrunner on my after lunch campus walk. Did not see any Acme traps.

As you gear up for the next round of holiday conversations about higher ed and how young people should navigate their futures, I highly recommend Jeff Selingo's live convo with Dan Porterfield. Wednesday 12/4 at 2pm ET / 11am PT us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regi... < sign up @hopkinspress.bsky.social

"Ridiculously good writing is about touching hearts... making the world feel a little more accessible. About making each one of us feel a little less alone." - @annhandley.bsky.social in her newsletter this morning. and I'm reading this applied to writing emails to our audience at work

How's everyone doing with fitting Bluesky into your online reading time? Is it taking away from something else, or are you just pushing to keep up with everything?

Just finished listening to Gartner's CMO Leadership Vision for 2025. CMOs are under extraordinary pressure (not that other C*Os aren't) as CMOs are uniquely impacted bc marketing is the one profession everyone feels like they can do. Some relevant takeaways for marketing leaders and their teams:
