The funder landscape for NGOs is under pressure internationally, not only just because of the USAID funding cuts, but developments in The Netherlands as well.

No joke, the Continent is publishing the best coverage of the DRC right now. And you can have it sent to you for free on WhatsApp and Signal!

It's depressing following the news around #USAID & it makes me wonder...with the far-right rising in Europe, will we be seeing a similar situation play out with European aid & development funding, including for European CSOs. E.g. see this news from last year: www.politico.eu/article/fear...

I haven't been this excited to read a comms book in a long time 😊 "Curated Stories: The Uses and Misuses of Storytelling" by @sujathaf.bsky.social

If you are still using TikTok, here's how you can at least support a group of excluded workers 😁 streetnet.org.za/2025/01/14/3...

I am always filled with antecipation, dread and excitement, for this report each year ❤️‍🩹

This reminds me of a Portuguese author I love saying how she usually reads drafts of her books to hear friends to "test the rhythm" of the writing. Yes, audiobooks are (another type of) reading 🙂 youtu.be/80SCl6n0TEo?...

Remember these when you’re told cuts are unavoidable because there’s no money… As Davos begins, shocking data revealed in Oxfam’s report: 💰Billionaire wealth is growing 3 times faster than it was just a year ago. 💰Billionaire wealth is growing by $5.7 billion every 𝙙𝙖𝙮.

Please don't move to Portugal just to escape Trump. There's enough problems here. slate.com/life/2025/01...

A surprisingly fun exercise: I went on Chat GPT to test the results on street vendors & food sovereignty, to try to understand what might come up and if it supported our views. The results were...actually kinda great? Which means there is enough content out there about this to feed the algorithm

Cyclone #Dikeledi has left 5 dead and has impacted almost 40,000 people in #Mozambique's Nampula province. The National Institute for Disaster Management reports 6000+ houses have been damaged or destroyed, as well as 3 health facilities & 35 schools, affecting 2,562 students.

Re the deal, UN secgen focuses on the humanitarian "catastrophe" aspect in Gaza as Biden glossed over it in his speech as if skating across a frozen pond

It is a relief to know that our ancestors were worriers — awake in the darkness with crowded minds. Their worry is why we’re here.

When I try to think of a good investigative article on street vendors' struggle for labour rights, @equaltimes.bsky.social article by Anne Pinto-Rodrigues is always the 1st example on my mind. It's one of those articles I feel proud to have contributed in some way www.equaltimes.org/kathmandu-s-...

Went to see it and it was fantastic, really makes you think about the importance of stories - they can be your way to have your rights recognized or ignored

As I suspect we'll start getting flooded with violent images from #Mozambique, I wanted to share this positive video I did based on interviews in October, about the story of a woman worker leader & how street vendors organized for better workplaces. This is also Mozambique.🇲🇿 youtu.be/HVm3WON_qms?...

This might be the first passing of a set of pro-worker climate change measures I know: 1 - A paid "climate leave" 2 - Obligation to inform workers of disaster & climate alerts 3- Adoption of preventive action plans (via collective agreements) 4- Gov must develop specific legislation within 12 months

The situation in Mozambique has been getting worse and worse for ordinary workers, especially street vendors. The ppl I talk with aren't even supporting anyone specifically, they just want an end to the instability. Whatever will come, the poorest will suffer most from conflict and insecurity.

These trends are horrifying & the worst part is that they seem completely plausible

With all that is going on with social media platforms, I can't help but think what a waste it was to invest in creating trainings for workers on how to use Twitter/Facebook/etc. We should just have reflected together on how to do digital communications in a different way & not really on these tools

This is beautiful ❤️🇧🇩

What does life at Kantamanto market – which has just been hit by a major fire – reveal about how fast fashion & textile waste are impacting local economies & communities? Our new #ThinkChangePodcast (recorded before the fire) investigates 🎧 @sara-pantuliano.bsky.social | @martaforesti.bsky.social

I really want to see this film

The best thing you can do is starve Meta for revenue. Never click on or buy anything through their ads. Never pay for an ad to sell a product or advertise an event. Never do anything again that will put one cent in Mark Zuckerberg's pocket!

If you search for "street vendors" on TikTok, you will find a plethora of videos of at least one creator giving huge amount of cash to vendors & watching them cry of happiness. It is truly poverty porn on another level. Street 👏 vendors 👏 are workers 👏 not 👏 a 👏 charity👏 case

Sharing UNIWA (org of informal economy workers in #Ghana) statement on the Kantamanto market, which victimized many of their members. They call on the government to: - Launch an investigation - Provide immediate financial assistance to traders - Provide psychological support loom.ly/Fa2w9tk

Winter in Alentejo

Depressing how beautification of cities always leads to the same people being expelled and abandoned. Not surprising, though, especially with the authoritarian regime now in power. Kudos to @elfaroenglish.bsky.social for covering the story of those who are the most vulnerable & yet invisible

In 2023, @oxfaminternational.bsky.social global inequality report showed that a street vendor in Ghana paid more taxes (proportionally) than Jeff Bezos. 🫠 Let that sink in. More than anything, we need #TaxJustice - for street vendors but also all other workers! streetnet.org.za/2024/12/18/w...

This is an absolutely appalling read and I understand even better now why so many brilliant, creative and smart young Africans prefer turning to the informal economy to make a living. "I was treated like a slave but I still could not speak up against my bosses. I was just glad the money had come.
