Was told today that, since the pay-walling of Cirencester Park ten months ago, there has been a 72% reduction in people visiting. That's 72% fewer people accessing their green space, getting less fit, getting more stressed, all to financially benefit one of the wealthiest aristocrats in Britain.

there's a line in this review that describes Chadwick's descriptive skills as akin to impressionism - adore!! But also love that Jolly praises how well Chadwick brings in the social history of the town - it's a novel rooted in a moment in time:

Congratulations to all longlisted here! Once more I find myself filled with self-loathing, but once more I also cheer those that have made it, in particular the wonderful ON THE CALCULATION OF VOLUME by Solvej Balle, tr. Barbara J. Haveland, just the most exquisite, strange and mesmerising novel:

!!! Alex here is 1) a shining star 2) very wise and 3) championing Lieke Marsman's THE OPPOSITE OF A PERSON (tr. Sophie Collins):

Rolling out the red carpet? No, sprinkling stars across the floor, laying an entire constellation across the street, to welcome our queen from Chile, the incomparable Nona Fernández:

🖤🤍🖤🤍🖤🤍

Ugh, Piero della Francesca sliding into my DMs again with his unsolicited diptychs.

Such a happy eve and friendly crowd! Not at all hard to see why Bàrd Books is shortlisted for @the-bookseller.bsky.social best London indie:

Thrilled for Josie Stewart, the whistleblower who has shown immense bravery, commitment & strength. As her solicitor noted, 'This is an important win not just for Ms Stewart but for civil servants, the public interest, & democracy.' www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

🇺🇸 share = about $80 bn. The European share about $120 bn.

'There are moments of real beauty in this book: sentences so well written, so balanced and satisfying, I went back to enjoy them again.' - review in from the @telegraphnews.bsky.social of DARK LIKE UNDER! www.telegraph.co.uk/books/what-t...

Marie Claire's Best Books of the Year on @angelotijssens.bsky.social THE EDGES (tr. @michehut.bsky.social): It 'explores that [coming-of-age] duality – the push-me-pull-me hesitancy between child and adult, between who we wish to be seen as and what we are desperate to hide – beautifully.'

'subtle, almost transcendent, grace' - beautiful review of Alice Chadwick's DARK LIKE UNDER from Marie Claire in their Best Books of the Year so far article - 'Chadwick’s prose is delicate, precise and not without a little humour': www.marieclaire.co.uk/entertainmen...

HACKNEY PALS! Come and hear Alice Chadwick in conversation with, er, me, at @pagesofhackney.bsky.social - Thursday 13 March, 7pm. Let's all swoon over her debut novel DARK LIKE UNDER, which is end of this month!! www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/dark-like-...

HAPPY HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY to Michael Amherst!! THE BOYHOOD OF CAIN is out TODAY with @faberbooks.bsky.social!! 'A literary star is born.' The Times ‘Powerful, searing.’ André Aciman 'Beautiful.’ Michael Magee 'Spellbinding.' Michael Donkor www.faber.co.uk/product/9780...

the RELIEF of hearing Stella Creasy on the Today programme this morning. It's so easy to write off Labour - again & again, they make me despair - but then someone like Stella Creasy speaks and you remember that oh yes, there *are* many members and MPs still with integrity, morals, commonsense:

'modern masterpiece' (thank you, Telegraph!! we'll take it, AND those 5 stars) THE EDGES is sitting pretty chez Marylebone, come and have your heart broken (and maybe put back together)

MANCHESTER PALS!! This absolute dream duo is HEADING YOUR WAY. Are you ready to yearn?

ngl I'm super proud of that book. NOT EASY doing a medium-complex (lil bit of sexy production lingo for you there) text without a production team or a project editor (it's me! I'm the project editor). Essential: a collaborative, efficient author who trusts advice; and a shining star of a typesetter.

I use this phrase sparingly but it's warranted here: now more than ever, this book, and the places & people you will encounter in its pages, is so important. Moving, timely and evocative, Victoria Donovan's LIFE IN SPITE OF EVERYTHING: TALES FROM THE UKRAINIAN EAST is out in April:

Great prize here for writers who are also carers. Please share :)

cannot emphasise enough how flipping cool, smart and warm Victoria is. I am SO excited to hear her speak about her beautiful and moving debut, LIFE IN SPITE OF EVERYTHING: TALES FROM THE UKRAINIAN EAST

'A literary star is born.' The Times A rave review for Michael Amherst's 'brilliant' debut novel, The Boyhood of Cain - 'the most affecting, satisfying finish to a novel I’ve read in a long time.' Out next week. thetimes.com/culture/books/article/boyhood-cain-michael-amherst-review-wlh70dv55

my brilliant pal Michael Amherst's debut THE CHILDHOOD OF CAIN, out Thurs @faberbooks.bsky.social, has received a *wonderful* @thetimes.com review from John Self. 'A literary star is born' 'dazzling' 'Amherst has Coetzee’s surface calmness, inner turbulence, understated emotion and muted wit'

turns out there's an accountant so nice that my colleague & I have both been singing his praises - unbeknownst (!! Chill out, Atkey) to each other - to his colleagues. No Nibbies for nicest, most understanding accountant, but he'd get our vote if there were. God love the good eggs of the world!

Congratulations to all! I am especially excited to read 1. Yuliana Ortiz Ruano's CARNAVAL [I thi-ink they're keeping the triple a?] FEVER (tr by Madeleine Arenivar) from Ecuador - adored the sample I read at PEN Presents time. Exuberant, fresh, beautiful. Bravo, @tiltedaxispress.bsky.social!

Happy @knightsofbooks.bsky.social are on Bluesky to all who celebrate! And I've added them to my UK & Irish indie bookstore starter pack, along with nearly 70 other greats! go.bsky.app/K7P6mVw

nb the Frances Wilson biog of Muriel Spark is ON ITS WAY!! June this year, hooo boy rubbing my hands with glee.

I am saving this for tmrw but Angelo is so eloquent, smart, curious and generous I KNOW this will be great:

(I do remember one of my old bosses ringing up one of their big-name authors and dictating the quote they were going to put on their book from them)

Getting quotes is one of THE MOST EXHAUSTING parts of the job. Any quotes I get are because the readers are kind, generous &, crucially, most importantly of all, have read & loved our books & I am always so grateful. Writers basically... tend to love reading. And know the importance of support?

Come & hear at Bàrd Books ace author-translator duo @angelotijssens.bsky.social & @michehut.bsky.social in conversation with the chicest chair in town, Barry Pierce, about THE EDGES ('a modern masterpiece' Telegraph), Thursday 20 March. It should be a real treat: wearebardbooks.co.uk/angelo-tijss...

this will be such a nice evening!! Come along!

'the quintessential melancholic book'. Thank you, @lonesomereader.bsky.social, for this thoughtful, engaged and *glowing* review of @angelotijssens.bsky.social's THE EDGES (tr. @michehut.bsky.social ) 'So much tenderness ... but there's also real passion.' www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYPg...
