My wonderful colleague Kristin Sampson is going to discuss the question “Why read Plato today?” on March 10! bergenbibliotek.no/arrangement/...

Honored to contribute to this vol. - finally coming out in April! On Gregory's account of creation, with Greek/transl. + short comm. ch's. Evidence that early Christians do interesting philosophy. Many thanks to Johannes, Anna, and my other colleagues! global.oup.com/academic/pro...

At the end of the month I will be at Princeton University to present my paper “Aristotle’s Democritean Forms”. Thrilled!

New addition in Bergen, spotted during a jog

I don't think I have a high IQ (I'm terrible at test-taking), and, judging by the behaviour of folk who claim to have one, I wouldn't want one.

I really hope everything beautiful and good is preserved in some Platonic realm of Forms, just in case Trump destroys all the copies.

Here is an early announcement of a big Aristotelian conference in Lisbon in early July. The call for papers is still open, I understand.

Deadline on Friday!

How nice! A review of my book in French by Ulysse Chaintreuil for Revue de mĂŠtaphysique et de morale

I actually collected all the ways in which Plato’s characters express agreement. A document 9 pages long.

With the New Year came the start of my #ERC funded project FitMA ("Fluidity in the Medieval Aristotle") @kuleuvenuniversity.bsky.social. Watch out for more news and announcements! cordis.europa.eu/project/id/1...

Happy holidays from Talete (Italian for “Thales”) and me

Very pleased to see a review of my book by Riin Sirkel for Bryn Mawr Classical Review! She even drew schemata based on my views: bmcr.brynmawr.edu/2024/2024.11...

It would really help, Microsoft, that something is done by now to be able to add comments to footnotes on Word.

One more infinite regress argument for us all. My article is finally entirely open access!

Reading HĂĄvamĂĄl, the Old Norse poem with life advice and philosophy, written around 1000 AD, in an excellent translation by Jackson Crawford (Hackett) hackettpublishing.com/the-wanderer...

Next week in Heidelberg and online: check out the updated program of the ancient philosophy conference on technĂŞ!

Soon off to Heidelberg to discuss technĂŞ in ancient philosophy!

As an undeserved break from grading, I made a starter pack. I've no doubt made lots of mistakes, and I hope you'll help me correct them. But I also hope it's helpful to some people who are interested in ancient Greek philosophy.

Philosophy lost a lot when it gave up the genre of "commentary on Aristotle".

Consider submitting a proposal for the International Aristotelian Conference in Lisbon (2-4 July 2025). Individual papers, panels, round tables, book discussions on Aristotle and the Aristotelian tradition... and I'll be one of the Keynote Speakers!

Your last saved meme is your moral philosophy

Leibniz, one of the inventors of the calculus no less, on the importance of medical science for promoting the welfare of the people, from his essay “Directiones ad rem Medicam pertinentes” (1671). This man was such a visionary.

Tomorrow!

Very excited to present my book in the new edition of The Shelves! Many thanks to the organisers in Torino, Cambridge Classics and Cambridge Philosophy for making this happen. #philsky #classicsbluesky

This morning my source of awe and wonder are these beautiful polar stratospheric clouds. (@helenreflects.bsky.social)

Very pleased to see the first result of my work on Asclepius’ commentary on Metaphysics Zeta: "Asclepius of Tralles’ Infinite Regress Argument Against the Generation of Forms in Aristotle’s Met. Z 8 1033a34-1033b5". journals.openedition.org/philosant/75... #philsky

It appears that my book ‘Aristotle’s Ontology of Artefacts’ is now officially published! 🥳🤩 As one of my dear colleagues said, I now “should at least make a chair out of it.”

Home office.

Today and in the next days I’m in Genova for “Works of Art and Technical Artifacts: Towards a Unified Account?” pea.unige.it/node/387. I am going to speak about “Aristotle on Products. A Unified Account of Works of Art, Technical Artifacts, and a Few Other Things.”

Tonight’s incredible moon on my run along Fjellveien

I am really excited my piece on sprezzatura and the aesthetic of rhetorical (aka Baroque) music is coming out in The Philosopher, a magazine that's been around since 1923! And look at the list of other contributors. So excited that The Philosopher took my article. It'll be out soon.

Today in Bergen Christian Pfeiffer will talk about “On the Use of the History of Philosophy for Philosophy”!

A little announcement [belated now]: I'll be at Notre Dame for the next 2'ish months, doing some of my project here. Look forward to the time here! Small profile here: historyofphilosophy.nd.edu/distinguishe...

It’s time to proofread! And to disclose the table of contents ☺️
