Delighted to see my book Art Shaped riding high again in the Amazon 'craft book' chart, a full 2 years after its release. It's tough to promote a book against quality competition when you're creating all of the publicity yourself, and working 7 days a week! 😁 @bloomsburybooksuk.bsky.social

"The illusion of permanent progress inflicts a particularly damning strain of despair as we witness the disillusioning undoing of triumphs of democracy and justice generations in the making — despair preventable only by taking a wider view of history" Maria Popova #MariaPopova #HopeOverFear

cannot unsee it but also being rendered in marble was basically the selfie of that time so it still checks out

Every artist I know is really struggling right now. Financially, emotionally, their confidence, in general. If you like an artist's work, support them any way you can. Buying their stuff or subscribing to their Patreon is great, but words of encouragement are also incredibly helpful.

Edward Gorey's "The Fantod Deck" is a send up of tarot cards. This is my spread for today and as ever with EG, the future looks grim. #divinationdecks #illustration #edwardgorey #artsky #penandink #darkhumor

Love this illustration in Tessa Hulls' #graphicnovel, Feeding Ghosts, of three generations of her family's relationship with the languages they speak. 📚💙 #memoir

Greg told me this during an interview 15 years ago, and it changed the course of my entire life. I'm not sure I'd have ever attempted my writing career if I hadn't heard this wisdom first. This whole thread is gold, and I can tell you it all works from personal experience.

Please consider wearing a mask in places where other people don’t have a choice about going—the doctor’s office, the metro, pharmacies and stores.

The resistance hero Sophie Scholl was killed by the Nazis on this day in 1943. She was 21. Her story and her immortal wisdom on suffering and the deepest source of strength:

It would be far less time-consuming to just document when he tells the truth. shorturl.at/tohgb

Worst. Episode. EVER.

For all of those who are staring down a life that looks very different than what you had hoped, please remember this: you don't have to choose either/or. You can do both 💛 Image: The New Happy #DaddyBlackbird #Loss #Grief #Hope 🐦‍⬛

I'm gonna keep reposting examples of people not taking shit because it's important for us to see that you can, simply, reject the shit. Say "Uh... no no no, we will not be tolerating that."

Today's extract from Serving the Reich. What makes it worse is that I don't even need to add any explanatory comment, do I?

A former senior KGB spy chief says Trump was recruited by them in 1987 due to his role as a prominent US businessman

DOGE is a lawless organisation operating with total disregard for the people it impacts. With no transparency or accountability it strips away the public services that millions rely on, from health and education to aviation safety. That Labour want to bring this to Scotland is deeply alarming.

Art was the language of life and love for art critic John Berger and his youngest son, the artist Yves Berger.

It was lovely to contribute to the @long_covid textile banner recently. I'm not an amazing sewer but I volunteer for them and wanted to help! This had elements of tracking, acceptance and hope. The day I sent it I'd had #LongCovid 1500 days, the number of tallies in the piece.

Top tussle today - GBBG winning the long battle by lifting the Cormorant + fish clear out of the water and Cormorant so hacked off it chased the GBBG half a mile downriver. #UKBirding

Every day as an illustrator is a humbling experience as I realize that I can't draw something that I've seen thousands of times.

I'm not really a cat person, but when this one started meowing and then leading my to the lychgate, I had to follow the instructions I found there...

I've just finished reading this! Highly recommend! I don't think I've enjoyed a book on art theory more, it's fun, illustrated beautifully, relatable, brings a clarity of thought and questioning to why we engage with art and what it's for. #whatartdoes #BrianEno #BetteA. #artbook #arttheory

Imagine the sickest you’ve ever been and how you couldn’t wait to get “back to normal”. Now imagine knowing that “normal” was never coming back. That your acute illness has become your permanent baseline. That’s life with chronic illness. There is no “better”.

Genuinely couldn't believe this figure until I saw the Financial Times confirm it using Meta's own financial reporting data For THIS $100 billion is genuinely the kind of money you could "do the impossible" with. Crack nuclear fusion. HIV vaccine. Universal flu vaccine And they spent it on this

‘Refugees will often have shown great courage, fortitude and ingenuity in the face of the obstacles placed in their way. Showing such virtues in order to escape oppression is not normally seen as evidence of bad character, rather the contrary.’ Christopher Bertram: www.lrb.co.uk/blog/2025/fe...

One of the things I enjoy about Robertson Davies' books is that I can enjoy them without understanding any of the references, while those I do add another level to the book. I do wonder about what I miss out on because I'm not enough of a polymath, but the books don't make me feel excluded.

Lagom, Załatwić, Dépaysement... Some words hold meaning that cannot be translated. On #MotherLanguageDay, it's worth remembering that one of the EU's founding principles is multilingualism. You can follow our Representations pages to see our content in all EU languages.

A detail from a study of Llandeilo bridge by JMW Turner, showing use of perhaps an engraving tool to create regular stippled lines. The study was discovered as a backing sheet to a finished version of the same subject at Amgueddfa Cymru, by paper conservator Christine Mackay.

South Africa’s icebreaker ship, the SA Agulhas II, returned to Cape Town on Monday after taking supplies and a relief crew to South Africa’s Antarctic base, but the results the scientists on board brought back are alarming. Read groundup.org.za/article/iceb... by Steve Kretzmann

Yes, of course. But as with the nonexistence of mass voter fraud, no amount of studies can falsify the belief that immigration is linked to crime, because these are not beliefs grounded in any material reality or empirical evidence. They must be believed to be seen.

Some thoughts on the release of the hostages’ bodies today. There’s enough sorrow to share. Enough empathy to go around. Let us break open, rather than close up.
