It’s a nice surprise to hear a song with “real world” instruments extolling those cherries that bounce all over the place. lostsongs.substack.com/p/pac-man-fe...

It's been almost 5 years since @tombreihan.bsky.social noted the lyrics to Dolly Parton's "9 to 5" could also work in a Rage Against the Machine song, and I still think about that at least once a week. www.stereogum.com/2081640/the-...

On Thursdays we talk about food: Today’s podcast features @markblankenship.bsky.social talking about how transplants are shaping Nashville’s culinary scene, and how it feels to come home to Southern cuisine both familiar and breathtakingly new. Listen here or wherever you prefer!

I'm honored to be the guest on today's episode of City Cast Nashville, discussing the "out of state cuisines" that are taking hold all across the city. nashville.citycast.fm/podcasts/how...

Really glad I got to review this!

Please enjoy my (slightly heated) argument that even though she doesn't write lyrics or compose music, Reba McEntire is still an author of her material. lostsongs.substack.com/p/you-lie-re...

To my fellow writers: Pray for me. I'm in a phase where every draft feels wrong, every sentence feels leaden, and every idea feels half-formed.

"It’s like Emily couldn’t wait for Amy. Her heart took over, singing about the bittersweet memory of young love, and she raced ahead." lostsongs.substack.com/p/least-comp...

This show was absolute trash, and it was a lot of fun to talk about it!

Here's why I love voice memos: They make it easy to send someone a surprise greeting, telling them that you care about them / love them / are thinking of them. It's like sending someone a singing telegram, but it's free, takes no advance planning, and only involves singing if you want it to.

Movie you've watched more than 6 times, gifs only.

I just wrote an essay about an Indigo Girls song and got VERY emotional, as you do.

I am very happy to be returning to @crimeseenpod.bsky.social!

This made my day! Come on over and enjoy our journey through forgotten (but fantastic) songs.

A few days before the Grammys, @sarahdbunting.bsky.social and I surveyed the landscape, made predictions, and threw shade the electric clarinet. Listen now! bleav.com/shows/mark-a...

Today, Beyonce became the second black female act to win the Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance. (She won for a duet with Miley Cyrus.) Exactly 50 years ago, The Pointer Sisters were the first. Here's more on the song that won them the award: lostsongs.substack.com/p/fairytale-...

Babyface is well known for his tastefully grown-up ballads, but here's a good song that proves he could get seriously freaky when he worked with Bobby Brown. lostsongs.substack.com/p/good-enoug...

The movies have taught me that anyone who refers to you as "old friend" is about to have you killed.

As I wrote this piece, @sarahdbunting.bsky.social blew my mind with her insight that sometimes a single song helps multiple artists become one-hit wonders. lostsongs.substack.com/p/kiss-him-g...

I am delighted by Hanna's reporting and the quotes she gets from people at the Tupperware closing sale.

Way back in 1962, Barbara George became one of the first teenagers to write a top 10 hit by herself. I wrote about that song today at The Lost Songs Project: lostsongs.substack.com/p/i-know-you...

Returning to Tennessee ended a yearning I'd felt for years, and it got me interested in folks who came to Nashville from other states. I wrote about several who are using "out of state food" to bring a sense of their distant home to their new one. thefoodsection.com/homecoming-d...

This song is so f-ing sexy to me. youtu.be/JQ2DVwSVIIo?...

We've hit the 10s! @sarahdbunting.bsky.social and I discuss the penultimate batch of Best New Artist winners, including Meghan Trainor, Zac Brown Band, and Adele, back when she was 19 (instead of 21, 25, or 30). LISTEN: bleav.com/shows/mark-a...

This is a remarkable piece of journalism.

I love the show SILO, and for the second year in a row, I was able to chat with prop designer Jonathan Norman about how they hand-make the objects that drive the plot. This time, with a deep dive into the "new" Silo where Steve Zahn lives! www.indiewire.com/features/cra...

Proud to have some of my stories in this "unlocked dozen!"

As @sarahdbunting.bsky.social and I continue discussing the Grammy winners for Best New Artist, we have reached the heady years of Maroon 5, Norah Jones, and Carrie Underwood. Listen here: bleav.com/shows/mark-a...

Last night, I was honored to receive a Phila Award for my writing in The Food Section. What an honor to share the stage with awardees from The Store, Second Harvest, Cooper Creek Farm, and Edible Nashville! Thanks as always to @hannaraskin.bsky.social for inviting me onto The Food Section's team.

Earlier this week, I was lucky enough to host a fundraising auction at the legendary Bluebird Cafe. I was auctioneering after some incredible music from Jeff Trott, Jamie Floyd, Cyndi Thomson, and Ryan Larkins. And it turns out I LOVE auctioneering!
