Some trees may still say winter but so much else is budding up now. The deer are sunbathing in the field at the edge of the wood, brimstone butterflies are out, and my Merlin birding app has picked up calls from chiffchaff, blackcap and greenfinch.

Around the parish as the week-long sunny spell begins to cloud over. Sunlight on brick, on plaster. Many are barely managing. How we’re all expected to switch to a wartime economy with greatly reduced welfare is anyone’s guess.

Every time I go away for a while I ground myself again with a couple of hours in some nearby, seldom visited gardens. The light, textures, stones, the greens and blues, browns and yellows, the scents and sounds tell me I am home, and always have been at home in life’s abounding, glittering jet.

A forecourt on a sunny evening in early spring, but maybe how we’re all feeling at the moment as the world’s super-rich run amok and grow crazier and nastier with each new day.

A roadside shrine, on KB Jacob Road, Kochi, Kerala.

Wherever we’ve been over the past few weeks, these fellows have been keeping an eye on us just in case we are distracted enough for them to swoop in and make off with our lunch. Mamallapuram, 25 February 2025.

Good to be back in Kochi, friendliest of cities. But I wish the authorities would do something about the city drainage. It’s hot and humid at the moment and the smell of rotting canals and half-open drains is all-pervasive.

Village colours. Near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. High in the Nilgiri Hills, it’s the most wonderful part of the world.

Terrible hooligan. Takes the brazen approach. Near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu.

Hello Gorgeous. This handsome fellow lives about 200 yards from the entrance to a busy hotel and pulls a ceremonial bullock cart with a mate. Unfortunately his predecessor was eaten by a tiger about eight months ago, so I guess he may be feeling a tad paranoid these days. Near Kabini, Karnataka.

Early morning over the paddy in Coorg, Karnataka. And when the mist clears, orange minivets, Malabar parakeets, sunbirds and bulbuls reveal themselves. #TravelPhotography #Coorg

The day draws down over the paddy in Coorg, Karnataka, one of the most pleasant places I’ve ever been. The forests are teeming with life and birdsong. #TravelPhotography #Coorg

Sandalwood City. So good to be back, and the promise of lush green hills to come. #Mysore

I have no idea what was going on. Vinoba Road, Mysuru, this afternoon. #BlackandWhitePhotography #India

Fabulous! I’m taking two packs …

A walk in the gales and rain in Blenheim Park this morning. Ended up soaked but so what. Recuperated with coffee and Bakewell tarts. #BlackandWhitePhotography

Fabulous idea. What would we choose in England? A lion might be too imperial these days. Perhaps a badger. Though a helicopter dressed up as Sir David Attenborough would probably win any competition.

January colours in Oxfordshire while the sun was shining this morning.

Ah, the promise of AI …

Laid up with a bug so in the meantime here is an image from March 2024 in central Oxford. I guess the music really was that serene. #streetphotography #blackandwhitephotography

Siesta time in Kumortuli, the potters’ quarter in Kolkata where highly skilled craftsmen make scores of beautifully prepared statues and idols for the city’s many festivals - but for now, just gentle sleeping sounds. #Photography #TravelPhotography #Kolkata

It’s 11 am and we’re in the pub drinking coffee and trying to summon the mojo for a walk in Blenheim Park and it’s old old oak trees. Outside it’s dark, wet and 2 degrees. That’ll be a 1600 ISO at midday vibe. #BlackandWhitePhotography

Pujas on the river bank in Varanasi, just three examples from thousands every day. Those much more knowledgeable than I could say what they represent. #TravelPhotography #Photography

The first snowdrops of the year for us, always by the same wall in Hampton Poyle any time from about 9 to 24 January. Also noticed a single daffodil bloom and a primrose coming out. Cheering lift on a cold grey day.

Moonrise, New Gosford, II. Not entirely serious. Adams’ “Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico” was made in 1941, three generations ago now. In our age of anxiety and climate change, how would we respond to the challenge today? #Photography #Blackandwhitephotography

A mostly deserted if wet Blenheim Park early this New Year’s Day as the gales pass over. A windy walk with almost no one else around, then hot coffee and hot food. Happy New Year to all!
