The modern world in old Ladybird books. "A lot of a policeman's time is taken up with controlling traffic." (1962) Artist: John Berry

I'm giving a training session on survey design soon. I've got one or two examples of bad practice as illustration - anyone got any other really good zingers I might use?

Worth reading

Regarding 20mph limits and emissions. Modern cars have management systems that limit fuel used to load rather than revs. Load is less at 20mph than at 30mph. It also takes 2.25 times the energy to reach 30mph as 20mph. Its why in the real-world 20mph limits are a +ive influence on air quality.

That’s more than a bit scary.😬 (Actually it’s a trike at the moment.) How did it work that out?

Unbelievable. There is no single mention in the article of cycles or cycling. Yet the subs automatically assume they’re to blame.🤬

“If you reduce speeds in large areas across a city, you get a reduction in accidents in other streets. It seems that this is the understanding now.” With this conclusion based on hard evidence, it’s difficult to argue against a default 20 mph in built-up areas of the UK.

Fixed it for you @Keir_Starmer

High quality, accessible cycle parking & storage are essential for inclusive active travel. The new edition of our inclusive cycle parking guidance explains what's needed so that Disabled people can park a whole range of cycle types wherever we want to go: wheelsforwellbeing.org.uk/guide-to-inc...

As a CSW volunteer I would like to believe this. But sadly I think it won’t work. The only thing that is going to change ingrained behaviour is a reduction in insurance premiums following more widespread introduction of lower speed limits. (Edited 14:20 via @skeetsapp.com)

The Highway Code changes three years on… and it’s not looking great Most drivers wrongly believe cyclists must ride single file, stay close to the kerb, and use cycle lanes – and one in three say they shouldn’t have equal rights on the road, new survey finds road.cc/312627 #cycling

CSW is not about infringing on people's civil liberties - it is about reminding drivers that speeding kills. Join your local Community Speedwatch scheme.

This stuff might feel trivial, but it's one example of how, over and over, people in cars are shown they are more welcome in our cities than people not in cars

They really, really need to pin this on Farage. When you think of the 'big beasts' of Brexit bollocks, there's not really anyone else left in the game so it should be quite easy.

“they've got speed cameras everywhere so it's not like you can go over the limit anyway … So the council putting the limit down to 20mph is ridiculous and will cause more traffic.” How’s that again?

“The Government has no intention of requiring cyclists, including those who ride Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles, to display number plates or to have insurance.”

“where are you going to cycle to in Coventry? It hardly has many idyllic places to visit” 🤣

“All of the ethical principles … suggest that on-street parking for cars is difficult to justify, and that cycling deserves more space. We argue that ethical principles should be systematically integrated into urban and transport planning.”

"We argue universities operating in countries with deferred payment schemes such as Australia and the UK have a responsibility to track unit failure in finer detail and consider ways to mitigate debt associated with students who are clearly not receiving value from their educational experience."

One of the very greatest things about #cycling is that whatever difficulties you may be experiencing, there is a cycle for you! Here's one of our most popular blogs of all time, which runs through your options: wheelsforwellbeing.org.uk/top-tips-cho... #InclusiveCycling #DisabilityCycling

Glad to see @openuniversity.bsky.social is on Bluesky. Hopefully, they start posting soon.
