Why didn't the Vietcong surrender? They had no cards!

So good when someone puts their bets explicitly on paper like this.

Are you interested in the content of my book, Beyond Happy: How to rethink happiness and find fulfilment? Ahead of the launch on April 10, I'm doing chapter summaries over on YouTube. Here's chapter 1, which is mostly about the hedonic treadmill: www.youtube.com/watch?v=whvl...

Pretty similar to my own process. Too much of the "discourse" is edge cases and regulation when that is irrelevant to 99.99% of the lived experience. Empathy and inclusivity are so much easier there. I found Shon Faye compelling because she started from day to day lived experience not philosophy.

Elon's right here & politicians desperately need to be allowed to make mistakes if they own it and learn. What's unacceptable in Elon and DOGE is their reckless hubristic negligence, which dramatically increases the frequency with which big & irrecoverable mistakes will be made for little benefit.

The illusion of a DIY society keeps us deluded into thinking we don't need a decent social safety net and keeps us divided by race, class, gender, and politics, so that we don't come together to challenge the kleptocrats who've forced us all into precarity.

Friends, foes, family: I have a popular booking coming out on April 10 - Beyond Happy: How to rethink happiness and find fulfilment. It's the book I wish existed when I was 18. I couldn't find it in 20 years of searching, so I went and wrote it. A video brief: www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XPZ...

Nationalist International discovers its design flaw.

F**k yeah gamers

cool to see this much more sustained development of an idea i like (and sorta played footsie with in a paper): that the most productive epistemic practices might look pretty different when one is in a congenial epistemic environment than when one is in a hostile epistemic environment

Class today on the policy challenge of European defence. Robust discourse among students. Its a class with both polo playing conservatives and social care leftists (I love Warwick). All of them agreed Europe should unite to repel Putin. No appeasement. Also saw Trump & Musk as liars. Encouraging.

I’ll spend a fun half-day on March 4 at @lsemethodology.bsky.social talking about field research prep, funding and logistics to PhD students and early career scholars. I was re-invited after last year’s session, so I presume it was helpful. Feel free to join!

Thinking of starting a charity that just hands out free headphones on the train.

@maltedold.bsky.social has written a very generous review of my book for Utilitas: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

well well well:

This never happens. The @prospectmagazine.co.uk paywall is down until 7pm GMT tomorrow, so head over our site to read for free @arusbridger.bsky.social

Fascinating profile of a park ranger in San Francisco who works with unhoused residents and has adopted the novel tactic of treating them like human beings, building relationships, and helping them access resources on their own timeline.

I received some copies of my forthcoming book in the mail! The official release date is March 11 #hps #philsci #psychology #metascience #sts

News in Europe got me feeling down and ever more worried about fascism, so I revisited Miklos Radnoti's death camp diaries, perhaps the finest writing to emerge from Hungary. The English translations here are good. allpoetry.com/poem/1485966... Man I hope we don't walk down this road again.

AI’s capabilities are often overstated, especially when it comes to ‘political readiness.’ My colleague @alturobov.bsky.social warns that policymakers, rushing to modernise governance, might mistake AI’s technical achievements for political competence. www.bennettinstitute.cam.ac.uk/blog/ais-per...

I'm sure AI can produce some solid pop tracks but I am deeply sceptical that it will ever be able to reach into the ether and *create* something like this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdw1... Fresh as the day it dropped. Copy it, sure. But not create it. And I don't want a firehose of sameness.

Are you bored this weekend and doom-scrolling social media? Why not check out the latest episode of ePODstemology instead? @banerjeeshonali.bsky.social from @warwickpais.bsky.social is on to talk about all things global development philanthropy! www.buzzsprout.com/1763534/epis...

Just did the QS survey for university rankings. What a joke. I can't believe anybody bases anything on this. "Name 10 universities..."

New episode of ePODstemology! @banerjeeshonali.bsky.social from @warwickpais.bsky.social is on to talk about all things global development philanthropy, including her new book on trust based philanthropy and Trump's impact on the sector. www.buzzsprout.com/1763534/epis...

I just spent about 15 minutes on TikTock doing some market research for my book and I'm honestly nauseated. People spend all day doom-scrolling this? It's like an IV drip from an ashtray.

Melbourne Uni has curated a collection of Decoloniality, First Nations Thinkers & Thought & Practices from the Global South of 677 items. Two years in the making. Humbled to feature in it; can't believe my luck to share space w/ folks I hold in high esteem. omeka.cloud.unimelb.edu.au/decolonialit...

England is widely considered to be one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world and local areas have been asked to develop nature recovery strategies. To develop the evidence base we are commissioning 4000 word discussion papers on the topic www.thebritishacademy.ac.uk/programmes/s...

This tweet expresses a deep truth, literally the best part of my day every day is just the aimless hanging out with Yuzi at the end.
