Trump has replaced the head of the military, FBI, stacked SCOTUS and stated “He who saves his country does not violate any law”. He’s sided with autocrats above allies and is purging the public service of non-sycophants. AUKUS? Still beyond questioning? What would it take?

They told us over and over to stop exaggerating, but it’s worse. Much worse.

And right on cue, Dutton floats extending proposed divestiture powers beyond the supermarket duopoly to force a break up of insurance giants. Reading the room - voters want governments to be more than bystanders. Neoliberalism is dead. The game has changed.

Trump says Putin - who invaded a neighbour, bombed its cities and murdered countless civilians - actually wants peace. “Yes I believe him on this subject”. Really? Again? If Putin wants peace, he simply needs to withdraw. That is the only test.

We've done the numbers on how much money is wasted by governments on sports funding. And it runs into the billions -- for no public benefit of any kind www.crikey.com.au/2025/02/11/a...

A thought for Labor. Does Peter Dutton’s empty policy cupboard suggest he will release it all in the campaign, replete with a Trumpian executive order-style list of “actionables”? He views Trump as decisive, big thinker & a deal maker. Could politics as a reality TV show work in Australian context?

This. Read. Act.

You were warned

Perfect!

I’ve seen a lot lately about the screenwriters outdoing themselves again. But honestly, if you were crafting a fictional treatment of the demise of American democracy, you would have tried to make the characters a lot more plausible.

pca.st/voccnj2b - speaking Auspol from a conference in Japan where much of the talk is of the global vogue for populist chicanery. Shallow times, deep problems.

Now do cars

I think the most impressive thing about #AI is the marketing behind it. The language is pretty stupid but it gets pushed out anyway. According to Altman ‘chatted up the information' is apparently how the 'young kids' describe searching for information using #ChatGPT 🙄 www.forbes.com/sites/johnwe...

Looking forward to diving into this Xmas day gift by one of my heroes of the fight against populist authoritarianism. Who knows, perhaps I can coax her into an appearance on ANU’s Democracy Sausage in the new year - what say you @anneapplebaum.bsky.social ? #DemocracySausagewithMarkKenny

Nuclear is not just the most expensive form of power generation but, for a sizeable chunk of the population, also unpronounceable.

Dutton claims you can’t be united as a country if you have more than one flag. Dude, our actual flag has another flag in it.

Gazumped. Already.

Wonderful news out of Syria with the people rising up against one of the worst, most brutal dictators. Assad has fled showing that strongmen are invariably weak when tested. More than a blood nose for his patrons in Iran and Russia also.

How much evidence does the RBA need? It has waited too long already. Absent government spending, the economy is in recession. We’ve seen this movie before - in the early 90s - and it was calamitous.

No more rules. My @smh cartoon.

Great news. Labor’s dubious campaign financing deal with the Coalition is in danger of collapsing.

Musk has now threatened the leaders of Canada,Brazil, Germany. X helped create a riot in the UK. Now it seems he doesn't want the UK to make its own legal decisions. Time to act?
