Next step, a giant military parade, with ICBMs rolling through Washington, D.C....

With minerals deal, Trump signals his frustration with Russia by opening the way to renewed arms shipments to Ukraine. It’s not a perfect deal for Ukraine, but - after the Oval Office meltdown - it’s a major diplomatic accomplishment for President Zelensky. My take

This press conference should be offensive to just about everybody in attendance. Instead they clap...

Ukraine say it's ready to sign a minerals deal with the US today - albeit one that seems a long way from what Donald Trump originally sought. Instead of the promised peace deal, "Trump needs to show a victory for his 100 days in office. And it’s a sort of such a win for him." My report

Yesterday we published our investigation into torture & death of Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna. Now, what I & several Guardian colleagues have been working on for past few months: inside one of Russia's worst torture prisons for Ukrainians www.theguardian.com/world/2025/a...

Amid an infantry shortage, Ukraine's military recruiters "without combat experience or health restrictions" will soon be sent to the front lines themselves... english.nv.ua/nation/trc-s...

Good evening

“This international investigation not only restores the voice of journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna, but also sheds light on one of the darkest chapters of the Russo-Ukrainian war, demanding justice and accountability for crimes committed against the civilian population.”

Donald Trump at least seems aware that he cost Canada’s Conservatives the election… www.theatlantic.com/politics/arc...

May foreign correspondents never cover your country. Signed, A foreign correspondent.

A huge blow for the leader of Canada’s Conservatives, one that will call his own political future into doubt. Not sure I’ve heard the modern Conservatives called the “Tories” for a while…

Not sure Carney’s platform was “anti-Trump”… more like pro-Canada-not-being-annexed…

Happy Canadian Election Day, from our neighbours to the south... Go vote, eh?

200 people detained by ICE because they made a wrong turn on the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit. 200.

Canadians will vote tomorrow in the most emotional election since 1988. I have my own preference. But I note: no one doubts that the vote will be free and fair - or that the loser will peacefully accept the voters' decision. That may not sound much. It's more than others have.

Trump and Zelensky met in St. Peter’s Basilica for about 15 minutes (pictures per Team Zelensky)

Meanwhile.

Canadians should care very much about Trump’s willingness to recognize Putin’s illegal annexation of Crimea…

In other news… “Medvedev said through his assistant that Hasek suffered from “Russophobia” and should be careful crossing the street and should ‘not drink beer in unverified places.’”

UPDATE A massive Russian missile attack on Kyiv on Thursday killed at least nine and wounded dozens in one of the deadliest strikes on the Ukrainian capital. The attacks throw yet more doubt on already fraught US efforts to push Russia and Ukraine to agree to a ceasefire u.afp.com/SSFv

Five more minutes to play, Mariia Didichenko told her daughter, and then it was time to go home for dinner. A siren wailed. The mother lifted her phone to check the threat. That’s when the blast hit them. My story in today’s @theglobeandmail.com www.theglobeandmail.com/world/articl...

Wow. The International Criminal Court has opened proceedings against Hungary for failing to comply with the Court's request to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu and surrender him to the Court, and invited Hungary to provide submissions by 23 May 2025.

CANADIAN REPORTER: Trump's tone on Canada has shifted. He stopped talking about Canada becoming the 51st state. LEAVITT: I would reject that the president's position on Canada has shifted. Perhaps he just hasn't been asked about it. He believes Canadians would benefit from becoming the 51st state.

Thank you to the journalists who spoke with us about their experiences. Serious sacrifices made to get independent media to ordinary Russians. Thanks to: Elizaveta Fokht Ilya Abishev Ilya Barabanov Anastasia Lotareva Andrey Kozenko Olga Ivshina

In Israel, current and former members of pretty much every branch of the military, and every intelligence agency, have signed letters calling on the government to make a deal for releasing the hostages and ending the war in Gaza. www.haaretz.com/israel-news/...

And with the US withdrawal, Erdogan and Turkey will very much have "taken over Syria" (as Trump said)...

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has visited northern Gaza, his office announced, as the military pressed on with its aerial and ground attacks on the Palestinian territory.

⚡️ Sumy Oblast governor confirms award ceremony plans ahead of Russian strike but denies responsibility. Sumy Oblast Governor Volodymyr Artiukh said he was invited to a military awards ceremony in Sumy planned for the same day when Russia launched a deadly attack but denied initiating the event.

"Wang... said he had a job in China but 'lost it during the COVID-19 pandemic and was looking for another option.' "At first, he negotiated with a Russian recruiter for a job as a rehabilitation therapist for wounded soldiers, but then, he says, 'he ended up in the army and had no choice.'"

Trump has fully turned on Zelenskyy: "He's always looking to purchase missiles. Listen, when you start a war, you gotta know you can win a war. You don't start a war against somebody that's 20 times your size and then hope that people give you some missiles."
