This scholar from overseas, one of 1.1 million foreign students that the United States is privileged to have at our universities, was seized off the street and imprisoned for six weeks — after she broke ZERO laws, but wrote one op-ed expressing views. And she still believes in America.

Samuel Slater, an English technician, brought mechanical textile looms to America in 1789. A lesser known Hamilton/Jefferson battle was over whether to help technicians escape an England that had Soviet-style blocks on their emigration. Nothing new about international competition for talent.

NYT Gift Article 🤔 A reminder to some of my friends on the left that the coalition to save America from MAGA is now very broad. (i.e. if I can tolerate AOC . . .) Charles Koch Says Many in the Country Are ‘Abandoning’ Its Principles www.nytimes.com/2025/05/01/u...

People keep describing NIH and NSF "indirect costs" in grants as funding for university paper pushers. Actually it is for the basic infrastructure of science. One consequence: millions of valuable laboratory mice are facing execution.

Harriet Duleep was one of the originators in the 90's of the Family Investment Hypothesis explaining human capital investment of immigrant women. Now Harriet finds that immigrant women behave more like immigrant men—more consistent with the Immigrant Human Capital Investment Model. bit.ly/4jHpGON

As an observer of Hungary before and after 2010, I fear that the Orbanization of America is happening even faster than it occurred in Hungary. Top Producer of ‘60 Minutes’ Quits, Saying He Lost Independence www.nytimes.com/2025/04/22/b...

The Alaska system forces BOTH political parties towards moderation, gives non-party voters a voice, and gives an exceptional 3rd party candidate at least a shot. WaPo Gift Article wapo.st/43We5WV

Your friendly reminder that it is literally a federal felony punishable by up to five years in prison for the President, Vice President, or any employee of the White House to directly or indirectly ask the IRS to open an investigation into any specific taxpayer.

Trump tried to bury this story on a Friday night, but it’s extremely important: He’s planning to take land on the border controlled by the Dept. of Interior and sign it over to Dept. of Defense so migrants “would have trespassed on a military installation,” resulting in harsher punishment.

Where is our humanity?

I am not a person who thinks exports are more important than imports, or that manufacturing is more important than services. BUT those who do should wonder what will happen to the $1.6T/yr US manufacturing exports during a trade war.

An economist who has spent several years publicly smearing me personally as an "activist" and "social engineer"… … because in addition to my influential academic research, I also advise policymakers… … now works directly for Donald Trump. www.whitehouse.gov/cea/informat...

A short 10 years ago, Mia Love, a birthright US citizen born to two Haitian refugees, became the first Black woman Republican elected to Congress and was widely considered a future star of the GOP.

Schumer: "If he defies the Supreme Court, then we are in uncharted territory ... our entire democracy is at risk. I believe that if Donald Trump should defy the courts, the public will rise up. Democrats will fight it in every single way ... autocrats only succeed if the public lets them."

I got laid off today, with the rest of 18F. 18F was an elite federal software shop. We made gov't websites work better, more efficiently for the American people. We saved taxpayers from getting screwed over by contractors. And were fired for it. We made this website to tell our story: 18f.org

Difficult to keep up with all the horrifying stories coming out of this insane administration: He entered legally, was in compliance with his parole, and was randomly arrested while working when ICE was out conducting street profiling. He's been detained away from his wife.

At left: @cnn.com on "The Fragility of America's Justice System" At right: #PrinciplesFirst attendees waiting to re-enter the venue while a bomb threat is investigated ahead of John Bolton's remarks We will wait calmly, then resume. We will protect what is fragile. We will not bend the knee.

@reedhoward.bsky.social: “A bomb threat by the Proud Boys disrupted the #PrinciplesFirst Summit today—an event dedicated to democracy, character & the rule of law. Violence & intimidation have no place in our politics. We will not be silenced or intimidated. We will keep fighting for what’s right.”

@garrykasparov.bsky.social gave the darkest talk just now at #PrinciplesFirst Visibly upset and vulnerable. Audience pretty stunned I think.

“What explains the solicititude towards Vladimir Putin?” Chris Christie “Because he wants to *be* Vladimir Putin.” #PrinciplesFirst Summit @principlesfirst.bsky.social

Join us this weekend to champion ideas and key principles of American strength—free people, free enterprise, the rule of law, the Constitution, a strong defense, human dignity, truth, and more. Our 1,100-seat venue is at capacity, but we have a waitlist: www.principlesfirst.us/summit/2025-...

I feel like I'm going insane every time I see a media story about DOGE that doesn't also mention the fact that the Government Accountability Office exists and performs the exact function that DOGE pretends to, only in a credibly constitutional, non-partisan, and conflict-of-interest-free manner
