In the May issue of “Odyssey” - in the 1960s, “New Worlds” magazine heralded a more mature approach to SF, and showcased work by authors such as Michael Moorcock, Brian Aldiss, Thomas M. Disch, Harry Harrison and John Brunner. Still the template for any serious SF based lit mag. Still impactful.

Anyone involved in publishing, reading, writing or editing scientific papers should read this argument against generative AI carefully.

This is doing the rounds at the moment. Moebius concept art for Space Jam.

In the May issue of Odyssey - way ahead of its time, a reinvented “New Worlds” magazine was at the forefront of 1960s SF New Wave. Edited by Michael Moorcock and featuring the work of writers such as JG Ballard. Join www.bis-space.com for your copy of Odyssey. #Odyssey #BIS @bsfa.bsky.social

Angela Carter BOTD in 1940. Her dystopian novel “Heroes and Villains” is one of the best in the genre. “The Bloody Chamber” and “The Magic Toyshop” also personal favourites, the latter having one of the greatest closing lines of any novel. #botd #writer #gothic #companyofwolves #angelacarter

Big fat mining ore hauler on Mars. Because why not. I had fun making this in #Blender. Do like a bit of hard-surface modelling. #scicomm #sciart #scifi

Anyone new following, I'm a bit of an Anderson fan, if you haven't already noticed and my particular favourite is Captain Scarlet, both classic and new. If you haven't watched them or anything else Anderson related, I recommend you give them a try. You might like them.

Angela Carter sf-encyclopedia.com/entry/carter... was born on this day: some illustrations to her stories by Gill Bradley, Meggie Wood, Igor Karash, Martha R Ford. I believe some/all relate to the Folio Society 2011 Book Illustration Competition where Carter's "The Bloody Chamber ..." was the text:

PERILOUS STAR Acrylic on Canvas - 9 ½” x 14 ½” This grasping, writhing mass of tentacles began as a simple exploration of a star stone design, but Michael couldn't resist adding the Lovecraftian creature. www.michaelwhelan.com/shop/perilou...

I just finished rereading "The 3 Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch" by Philip K Dick. Perhaps his most imaginative venture into drugs, religion, and the nature of reality. For me his most powerfully disturbing book. And I do not say that lightly.

"Conclave" is short for "Construct Clavius"

Made this after a trip where I found myself staring at stained glass in old churches for way too long. Not sure it’s finished, but I needed to let it go for now. Open to thoughts, might revisit it later. It’s about the black hole that formed after two binary stars collided #scicomm #sciart

Congratulations to Phil Stooke, whose third volume of Mars mission maps is now available for pre-order from Cambridge. It's spendy but priceless for understanding the course of Mars exploration. I wrote the foreword! www.cambridge.org/us/universit...

100% this, no notes. Okay one note - this entire sequence from 'Jason and the Argonauts' is one of my greatest childhood memories, what I still consider to be a pivotal moment in special effects and why skellies are my favourite adversary in any fantasy game. What a movie.

In the May issue of “Odyssey”: Decidedly retro looking now, maybe, but in 1926 Hugo Gernsback launched “Amazing Stories” with a motto that perhaps prefigured the BIS’s own strapline: “Extravagant Fiction Today…Cold Fact Tomorrow!” Join the BIS for your copy of "Odyssey." @bsfa.bsky.social #Odyssey

This is such a great launch photo! ULA's Atlas V launches Amazon’s Project Kuiper satellites into orbit from the Florida coast (28 April). It's part of Amazon’s initiative to deliver global broadband internet from space and will be a rival to Elon Musk's Starlink.

An amazon ISBN number attached to your book will scan as an amazon book. This is a good indicator of self published. This may affect how your book is handled by stores, awards and general sales. Bias continues in this industry. #writingcommunity #booksky #isbn #bias

Soviet-era spacecraft meant to land on Venus in the 1970s is expected to make uncontrolled return to Earth, probably around 10 May. The chance of it actually hitting someone or something is small but cannot be completely ruled out. Watch out for falling debris! www.theguardian.com/science/2025...
