There are improvements that could be made in AmeriCorps, particularly in ensuring corps members aren't taking jobs — but the overall objective is admirable and service opportunity for young people is irreplaceable. That was ESPECIALLY TRUE for those of us who graduated into the great recession.

I just got a government press release, about the "increasing aut*sm ep*demic" I am not even going to screen cap it here. From HHS.

It’s fascism somewhere.

The city did a 'reply all' to its release about police capturing the FQF shooter. With this:

Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and his family were forced to flee from the governor’s official residence early Sunday after an arson attack severely damaged the mansion. Here's what to know about the attack.

Lycée Français forked over $408k in property taxes after error during last renovation And no, you are right — schools ARE exempt from property taxes. thelensnola.org/2025/04/11/l...

"Every city has a French school, but few are as deeply committed to an organization wide drama program as the charter school in New Orleans." - @panarmstrong.bsky.social

This is a HOT topic in my breast cancer surgery group. This hospital surgery center is in New Orleans.

Somewhat ironically, roughly a quarter of that money went to the Orleans Parish School Board. The district has the highest property tax millage in the city. (That means the city of New Orleans skimmed a cool 2% off the top in between schools) thelensnola.org/2025/04/11/l...

Your tax dollars at work. Schools don’t have to pay property taxes - but Lycee failed to transfer its property after a renovation leaving taxpayers on the hook for $408k.

Thought you’d had your fill of concerning reads this week? This one’s important. Give it a look.

There’s a bizarre bank of New Orleans charter school knowledge up in here.

Never a dull moment in my 13th year reporting on Lycee. Then: State supe John White visited the charter begging French national teachers not to leave. Now: Lycee failed to file the proper paperwork to avoid property taxes — which schools are *exempt* from thelensnola.org/2025/04/11/l...

The Lens presented Lycee’s $400,000 property-tax predicament to leaders in the charter school world — local authorizer groups would not comment. Neither would state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education members. BESE authorizes Lycee and oversees your tax dollars in its budget.

NEW: Lycée Français de la Nouvelle Orléans forked over more than $408,000 in property taxes — even though public schools are exempt from such charges in Orleans Parish. “The board decided to take that whole transaction on themselves, and now they have a problem." thelensnola.org/2025/04/11/l...
