We just published a NEW @stemteachingtool.bsky.social on how to PROMOTE EQUITY in #STEMed — based on the powerful @nasem-education.bsky.social EQUITY IN K-12 STEM ED report. Be sure to explore the detailed equity assessment tool included! ➡️ stemteachingtools.org/brief/101 PLS RESKEET #SciEd #NGSS

Great explanation of how cutting indirect costs to universities will cause irreparable harm to scientific research in the U.S. Please share broadly with folks who may not get how these costs support the research that has brought us medical, scientific, economic, and social progress for decades.

In case you needed more reasoning as to why teachers and students should be steered away and not towards these companies’ products!!

As someone still admittedly in a skeptical place around all of this—but also aware of its inevitable impact now and going forward—I found this piece + framing really thoughtful/helpful 🙏 @ditchthattextbook.com

I get that invoking Orwell is overplayed, but there's a reason newspeak limited language as a way to control thought. Eliminating language about diversity, bias, inclusion, etc is an assault on our ability to intellectually comprehend and publicly investigate these concepts. That's the point.

I suppose it sorta makes sense that early humans traded off fur coats and physical strength for big brains that allowed us to create clothes and tools and now we’re apparently trading off those big brains for the ability to use hallucinatory auto-complete to write reports for us.

whn.global/yes-we-conti... Great explanation of why my partner & I continue to mask. Well, some of our reasons. (In the covid sense, not the Autistic sense, lol!)

It would be nice if people could stop acting like DEI is an only a moral good. DEI strengthens organizations. People from diverse backgrounds bring new ways of solving problems and serving people. DEI isn’t a gift to diverse people. It’s a gift to the orgs that hire us.

There is something nefarious about how hard and fast people are pushing AI in education. I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but it doesn’t bode well when corporations, not student need, set the pace with which we adopt new technologies.

Appreciate how frank this is. Always concerning how many people implicitly feel progress of all sorts is inevitable. youtu.be/ZfBkw0j-QIs?...

I will never forget, too, one student's comment in an informal discussion this past summer: "Like, all the teachers are using it, too." Students realize the hypocrisy of worrying about student AI use while at the same time it proliferates for educators. And it further exhausts them.

"But to better understand where AI is leading us — and whether or not we like the destination — we need to think about the emotional toll." The combo of 1️⃣ the student essay this post is based off and 2️⃣ @jasongulya.bsky.social's reaffirmation from the lens of an educator is MUST-read. Like now.

I mean, literally, the answer to this is "I am federally prohibited from telling you anything about my students without a subpoena or judicial warrant; if you have a subpoena or judicial warrant, please submit it to [Legal Officer/Office] to ensure it is in compliance with all relevant federal laws"

I cannot understate the devastation that losing #NSF funding would have on K-12 education. For example, #NSF-funded research informed the design of the #OpenSciEd instructional model, which has enhanced Ss & Ts access to HQIM. Share w/ legislators how NSF has impacted you & to protect this funding.

The price of eggs in the US is spiking, mostly due to #H5N1 bird flu. Solving the problem requires urgent, important communications from the CDC & FDA* and rapid development of research by the NIH** * Currently paused by Executive Order ** Grant reviews now all canceled www.kcur.org/news/2025-01...

When I train teachers about trauma-informed classrooms, I emphasize that you cannot simply declare that a person or a place is safe and make it so. People determine safety for themselves based on explicit and implicit cues of safety. (🧵 1/4)

I adore @larryferlazzo.bsky.social and reading “10 Actions Teachers Can Take Now That Trump Is President” first thing this morning has fired me up! Teachers: this is good stuff! www.edweek.org/teaching-lea...

Devastating for scientists and their research, and everyone who benefits from that research. I’m not sure if everyone outside academia is aware that a delay or “pause” in grant funding often means the researchers themselves are lost from the field, along with their expertise.

TLDR: There is nothing enforceable for the immediate future. It will take months or years to implement this via rulemaking or bureaucratic changes which are then subject to legal challenge. While it's worrying, there's no immediate change yet for most trans people. Do not comply in advance.

Every trans person you know or work with it going to be told in multiple executive orders today that their country doesn’t see them as human. Every leader of every school and company and every person elected to serve people should be shouting their rejection of this hatred.

This is an important reason for those of us in education to push back against watering down ethnic studies classes, keeping CRT out of schools, tech like the awful AI bot based on Anne Frank, and all the other things happening to further sanitize what students learn about resistance.

I am not a man. Evan Urquhart is not a woman. No matter what Trump's government said. So much of what Trump wants to do targeting trans people will depend on cisgender people to enforce his policies and police our bodies and spaces we exist in. So much can be stopped by people refusing to do so.

Oh my God

Here's a small weird potentially good thing: The USPS website is still, as of a few minutes ago, processing requests under the free covid test program. No idea when that'll be shut down, but it hasn't been yet.

“The thing that makes me worry is how much these people are giving up the very mental tasks that make them human.” chuckpearson.wordpress.com/2025/01/13/t...

“Our country needs a professional and independent civil service. We can’t expect federal employees to save it on their own. That burden will also need to be shouldered by all those Americans who will suffer if it’s destroyed.”

Feels like an appropriate time to share this story I wrote a few years back: www.ehn.org/natural-disa...

Today I was asked in an interview about folks who use the weirdness of ✨quantum✨ to hawk pseudoscience junk. I think that kind of grift proliferates because of a big misunderstanding a lot of folks have about quantum mechanics, which is not really their fault! 🧵

Today is a good day to start masking again if you stopped. 😷 COVID-19, RSV, flu & more are spreading. In addition, we are fighting against mask bans in NY and other places. Wearing a mask is a great way to show solidarity and show support for being able to wear a mask.

Back to work tomorrow, but my husband and I managed to spend a few days hiking on Lake Superior's north shore. The temps just above freezing meant snow was sparse, but did make for some impressive fog.

I don’t really like the idea of making New Year’s resolutions but I am taking some time to think about what structural changes I can make in my life to reduce the need to rely on resolve

After back issues kept me off the trail for a few years, I got back out backpacking this summer! The back issues are still there, but I've got more strategies to keep them manageable.

-Finished my PhD -Gave my first talk outside the US (which also meant a trip to Germany!) -Started biking regularly and have managed to keep it up once I had to start biking indoors due to lack of daylight

If we protect the most vulnerable among us, which at the moment is trans women of color, then maybe we will all get free. We are never going to get free by “choosing our battles” and ignoring that the entire country has trained its ire at one percent of the population. I implore you to be better.

The ways we as adults respond to questions impact whether kids keep asking them. #EduSky

A few projects are wrapped up at work and my university grades are posted. I have officially made it to winter break!
