Holy crap, HHS cancelled VRBPAC. (For non-public health people: This is the US contribution to the WHO-led identification and selection of flu strains for the next flu shot. There are other countries contributing. But US labs and expertise have always been a huge factor in the final agreement.)

Pedro Pascal responding to transphobia on social media: “I can’t think of anything more vile and small and pathetic than terrorizing the smallest, most vulnerable community of people who want nothing from you, except the right to exist.” (via @charliejane.bsky.social) [capitalfm.com]

Hey, what's up with books having sprayed edges these days? LET ME TELL YOU THE STORY! I was there! Thread: 1/13

Phrase read a few minutes ago in one of my chats: “… collectively in the face of mass wanton destruction.” On that note, it’s time to do my nightly reduction of phone notifications and dive into ebook reading. Tonight might be fiction instead of nonfiction.

One of my little hobby projects is a scraper that pulls in food recall data. It started failing at 8:09 pm (last successful run was at 3:15pm yesterday). For some reason requests to www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls timeout now. Is this maybe a side-effect of DOGE (they work in browser, not curl)?

This is horrible for the future of American science and innovation and economic wellbeing and all the things Pitt is not a small institution It has nearly 10K grad students It is where Salk discovered the polio vaccine

You better believe I’ll be working this in on Monday.

Yesterday many thousands of federal employees were terminated. This is a Reddit thread for federal employees that got laid off.

No one is immune from disability. It can happen to anyone at anytime, regardless of how 'young and healthy' you are. Stop believing you will be the exception, and start engaging in disability justice. It's far easier to fight for better support and treatment while you still have your health.

NEW — In an alarming email last night reviewed by me, Coast Guard members learned that 1,135 members' direct deposit account routing information was compromised due to a data breach from unauthorized access. It was only discovered because an officer “reported anomalous activity” on their account.

Bluesky is where you run into both your union comrade @theredheadted.bsky.social and the guy who was across the hallway from you in your freshman dorm @atarispot.bsky.social. Where are my other old friends?

Parade day. Go Birds. 🦅 More photos later/tomorrow!

I wish I was in Philly right now 😭

Already reskeeted this, so I guess it gets quote skeets from here on out.

A friend of mine worked as US Aid for a number of years, traveling the world doing crucial life saving work. She sent me this link that puts the sudden, illegal stoppage in stark numbers. Can I ask as many of you you out there as possible to spread this link around? www.usaidstopwork.com

“City health officials are urging New Yorkers to get flu shots as influenza cases skyrocket higher than they have been in the last five years.” Shots and masks are your friends, friends

BREAKING: Philadelphia workers have won the first Whole Foods union under Amazon with UFCW. Since Amazon bought the chain, workers have lost benefits and felt the squeeze. Now they're fighting back against the multi-trillion dollar giant and hoping this win will be the first of many.

The price of eggs in the US is spiking, mostly due to #H5N1 bird flu. Solving the problem requires urgent, important communications from the CDC & FDA* and rapid development of research by the NIH** * Currently paused by Executive Order ** Grant reviews now all canceled www.kcur.org/news/2025-01...

Hahahaha, same exact thought process over here.

Hi to folks who are relatively new to Bluesky! Still feeling a bit lost or unsure how to set things up well? 1) Use some of the hints & tricks found at bsky.app/hashtag/blue... 2) Toggle the setting to require alt text on images you post, which gently reminds you to add it & helps many people here

Sign of the times that the first place I announce this is Bluesky: I switched jobs this past Monday from one federal agency to another. Went from a Dodd-Frank financial regulator to a Dodd-Frank financial monitor. Job purpose: always working to improve their websites.

Mmmm, data. 😋

Why can't we just automate it??? 🤡🎪🤡

If you're a Spotify user who is finding the microgenre & geodata of your annual "Wrapped" to be less substantial than usual, there's a reason why. A year ago, Spotify laid off most of its employees who worked on genre classification, including folks like data alchemist @glennmcdonald.bsky.social.

A popular Python project's GitHub Actions CI script did not adequately treat the git branch name as untrusted user-generated content, so an attacker used a git branch name to inject a crypto miner into that project's PyPI release. This is an incredibly creative supply chain attack.

This hits way too close to home for me right now.

With AI transcription tools, I think it's REALLY important to revisit the concept of "informed consent." UX researchers should be familiar with this term (to read more, 18F has a nice little explainer: guides.18f.gov/ux-guide/res...). For me, this applies to all meetings (not just research sessions)

Interesting article. #BlackSky www.inquirer.com/opinion/ghan...
