Conversely, I suspect one of the things Trump finds most attractive about tariffs is that the CEOs and Chairman of vastly more succesful companies than his have to come grovelling to him for exemptions that he can grant or withhold without any process, oversight, or transparency.

*Grants of up to £1,000 available to cricket clubs* This year we are expanding our funding, offering three special grants of up to £1,000 to promote friendly cricket in the UK and Ireland... 🏏🧵

There’s a world of difference between a principled stand and righteous indignation. Take a breath friends. This saga has a while to run. A thoughtful response is often far more effective than an emotional reaction.

Earned income is a huge opportunity for charities to scale their impact while balancing their books. But it’s not easy, and there’s one big question you’ll need to answer if you’re going to succeed. binleydrake.com/growing-comm...

I’m certainly not the first, nor I expect will I be the last, to commend this analysis. Depressing as it may be, @lewisgoodall.com pretty much nails it here.

Our health is shaped by the world around us – good homes, stable jobs, social ties, green spaces, and clean air. 🌍 These are what we call the building blocks of health and wellbeing. When these building blocks are missing, our health suffers. Here's why. 👇 youtu.be/prAxFMyppIA?...

So one of the things that I think is lost on AI proponents is what I call the card catalog effect, a thing I shouldn’t call it because a lot of people probably have no experience with a card catalog.

"Commercial business models can be fantastic for charities. But getting them to work isn’t easy" - @martyndrake.bsky.social

New project! About women in remand* in UK prisons: Giving Evidence will be assembling all the evidence, to see what's known & what isn't about them. Do get in touch if you're interested / have relevant material. It's a systematic review / evidence + gap map... www.giving-evidence.com/remand

The excellent @kateleeceo.bsky.social has entered the building!

"We’ve little alternative but to think seriously about how civil society organisations can not just survive but do yet more with even less" - @martyndrake.bsky.social

I strongly encourage you to read this op-ed by Peter Thiel. He is considered the true brain of the Paypal mafia. The incoherence, paranoia & self-absorption, the meandering, impenetrable prose, the paper-thin thesis & logic… These are the men who want to run the world. www.ft.com/content/a46c...

It’s a critical year for the government to shift from sentiment to real action. Here are four things we should look out for - @thisismatthyde.bsky.social

A few years ago I realised that only a few men were applying for RA jobs in my lab. I removed "experience working with children" from the criteria and that changed overnight. Teenage boys don't get to do work experience with kids, so they can "seem" less qualified. But some of my best RAs are men.

Just in case someone needs to see this.

Most people don’t realise that half of all UK charity income is earned. This conversation explores that “hidden half”; looking at what it takes for service delivery charities to succeed, and how they can collaborate and innovate to have a wider systemic impact. youtu.be/XJBLpaSh_CQ?...

The female lead is called Holly FFS. How can this still be up for debate??

what the fuck. Of course it's a Christmas movie.

"Charities have allowed their services to become increasingly commoditised, bidding against each other for lowest-common-denominator contracts that barely break even, each of them fighting to hold onto enough income to keep their doors open" - @martyndrake.bsky.social

Although my mum is no longer with us, she’s fondly remembered every Christmas, when we hang her gift of the most hideous tree decoration ever

It surprises me how many civil society organisations, who involve volunteers in their work, don’t fully appreciate the impact and value of volunteering as an activity in its own right, not just for the individual, but the capacity and connectivity it can bring to neighbourhoods and communities.

Huge challenges for charities in commissioned services like health and care, justice, youth and education. Next Thursday I’ll be in conversation with two of the sector’s finest - Irene Sobowale, CEO of Brainkind, and Naomi Hulston, CEO of Catch22. Join us: profitonpurpose.org/2024/09/05/i...

Fabulous conversation with the CEOs of (respectively) Charities Aid Foundation (distributes £1bn of funding each year) and British Asian Trust (pioneering social finance). Long listen (58 mins) but solid gold. youtu.be/p5q1Jdv3960?...

This is a long read, but if you’re interested in the practicalities of devolution and collaborative leadership, it’s well worth the time to read. It’s a sample of one. And there may be unique reasons it’s working here, e.g. Manchester’s Co-operative history. But inspiring nevertheless.

Any approach that at least aims to start from an understanding of local need and local resources is to be welcomed. There’s a big difference between words and actions, but we seem to be hearing the right words so far.

Charities need to be more commercially astute. Whether it’s commissioned services or corporate partnerships or changing mainstream practices, you need to understand business. If you can’t buy, beg, borrow or steal a copy, DM me and I’ll post you one for free. fundraising.co.uk/books/the-co...

This is simply unacceptable. "In primary schools, nearly 90% of those permanently excluded over the past five years also had special educational needs and disabilities" Imagine the outcry there would be if this was happening to any other group of our children! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

I take my hat off to the charities working in this space, trying to meet the spiralling demand. But this is a systemic issue and it needs a systemic solution. I get that Labour inherited this mess, but top-down departmental edicts will not fix this. It needs a collaborative, outcome-led approach.
