Masa accepted the challenge from Zenos, but made it very clear to him that if had just ASKED from the start instead of dragging the whole world into this bullshit he would have said yes and fought with it all. Masa managed to win but grievously injured and knew he won't be able to make it back.

Each of them have a facet of the Azem, mostly in personality but some in looks. The reason why Emet was so curious with Masa is because he thought he saw her "core" in him, because he was kind and gentle. (When in reality he had her viciousness when what she loved got threatened)
