A social sciences and humanities reading list on AI in education 🧵

Used the "muted words" function for the first time and muted some political ones. If I see someone commenting on politics, I will start unfollowong directly. If you haven't figured out politics is just a distraction for the masses so far, I will not be reading your opinions on any politic issues.

A valuable roundup of research evidence from 5 studies on the impact of GenAI on human learning. TLDR: over-relying AI assistance can be associated with reduced critical thinking. drphilippahardman.substack.com/p/the-impact...

New article from me, @charleswlogan.bsky.social, and @anterobot.bsky.social on the evolution of "Luddism" as a social identification and its potentials (and limits) for organizing resistance to automation in education today. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... Paywalled, but reach out for a PDF!

New open access paper on the complexities of hybrid teaching, learning spaces, materiality, choreography and improvisation, all that good stuff! Led by @jameslamb.bsky.social with @jenrossity.bsky.social and @joenote.bsky.social www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Letting AI do the reading for your research is like wanting to see a film but listening to someone tell you about it instead

People who view teaching as merely a job to be done, will use AI to optimize and automate their processes. People who consider it a form of a personal relation and communication with others will be more willing to resist using it especially if it is not needed to achieve the results they want.

Is pit possible please just to get a hard copy of this for those of us for whom reading online is quite difficult?

What I miss here: Drafts Bookmarks Muted words

AI in education is here to stay. Any conscience appeasing attempts to soften its impact by talking about ethical and responsible use are just surface level unhelpful PR for the products.

The best way to combat something is to ignore it and not feed it your time and energy. Even if you are against the use of AI in your field, the constant attention you are giving it, further perpetuates the conversation and fuels the hype about it.

How do we reconcile neoliberalism induced inter-team competition with our values as educators? Do we comply or defy?

How does the evaluative HE culture shape our identity as teachers? Great insights I can totally relate to www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

It's good to see staff and students' well-being and emotions getting into the #genAI use equation www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

Yeah, I went to a Google for Education conference in Eastern Europe in 2014 - the Edtech emissaties were trying to win markets. I was one of those "get on the innovation" band wagon teachers. Glad I saw through all this and changed my view on Edtech.

Open AI new agent Operator can do a lot of the tedious tasks for you. I'm very suspicious of easy solutions and shortcuts. In the long run I feel this can be detrimental to humans. Doing the grocery list is a type of mental gymnastics for me and I wouldn't want anyone to do it for me.

That's Interesting and makes me wonder... What would be the implications of that? What will be the role of the student? Will there be a human student at all? Will AI students compete with human ones?

I have not engaged in playful learning in my HE classroom apart from the occasional competitive activity but I think it can be a good response to the aggressive push of technology, a kind of back to basics thing. The human touch in a tech oriented world #LTHEchat
