What a great honour to contribute to this piece on the evidence and the implementation considerations for ERAS and look to ERAS's future potential with Gregg Nelson and Kevin Elias for @nejm.org NEJMEvidence evidence.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

Older people in the US using Medicare who could have accessed care at home for consultations that didn’t need a physical exam will now need to go to medical offices. The mobility issues and $ for these folks…. At the end of the day, there will be less care provided which, I suppose, was the intent

Delighted to take on a new role as Vice Chair of Research for the Integrated Department of Surgery at Mass General Brigham

Cliff Ko presenting quality/value masterclass at Victor Fazio lecture #ICDS25. Quality is best for patients & good quality costs less. Optimization necessary: patient factors drive poor outcomes more than surgeon/hospital factors @swexner.bsky.social @boutrosmarylise.bsky.social @3isac.bsky.social

When patients are not heard by their doctors there can be devastating consequences. So why does this happen & what can be done to address it? On the cover, Dr Rageshri Dhairyawan explores this question. Read her full essay & more: tinyurl.com/5c7xwj2e ‪@drrageshri.bsky.social‬

@drmlb.bsky.social presenting on physician wellness #ICDS25 Thank you for your wonderful advice. “Joy is a form of Resistance”

Brooke Gurland presented incredibly compelling evidence for mindfulness for surgeons at #ICDS25. Surgeons already use mindfulness techniques in the OR. It is a practice and becomes more effective over time. @swexner.bsky.social @boutrosmarylise.bsky.social @3isac.bsky.social

Absolutely incredible perspective-altering talk on surgeon wellbeing @drmlb.bsky.social at #ICDS25. Task: 1 lead with compassion 2 speak the truth (this is not normal) 3 remember who we work for (patients, etc). It only takes 17% to change culture! @swexner.bsky.social @boutrosmarylise.bsky.social

Inspiring talk on the value of surgical coaching by Sharon Stein at #ICDS25. It takes humility for surgeons to engage in professional coaching but surgeons should have as many coaches as elite athletes! @swexner.bsky.social @boutrosmarylise.bsky.social

@maryebrindle.bsky.social presenting a thought-provoking analysis and approach to the surgeon as a second victim at #ICDS25. @swexner.bsky.social @boutrosmarylise.bsky.social @3isac.bsky.social @clevelandclinic.bsky.social

Impact of Multi-Institutional Enhanced Recovery after Surgery Protocol Implementation on Elective Colorectal Surgery Outcomes @acsjacs.bsky.social @facs.org #MGB #BWH journals.lww.com/journalacs/a...

Yes! #ERAS in colorectal surgery across multiple sites. Almost 9000 patients studied and published in @acsjacs.bsky.social ⬇️ SSI ⬇️ 30d complications ⬇️ LOS ⬇️ Readmission The video is worth watching. 🔥culture and 💪 implementation

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols have been shown to improve surgical patient outcomes, but are the effects maintained across multiple hospitals? 🎥: Dr. Ronald Bleday shares the results from his recent @acsjacs.bsky.social article.

Between cases on call I have started to make awards for the residents and fellow surgeons for their exceptional personal qualities.

A beautiful and moving piece by @rafleishman.bsky.social in @nejm.org. People who aren't in healthcare may not realize that a quantitative value is assigned to everything providers do. And they might be surprised to by the values that get assigned. www.nejm.org/doi/full/10....

Today I am ridiculously proud of two of my junior colleagues and #pedsurg colleagues Tito Daodu @ucalgarymed.bsky.social and Mercedes Pilkington @sickkids.bsky.social @sickkidsvs.bsky.social Congratulations on receiving CIHR funding for two incredibly important projects

! 840 adult patients undergoing emergency lap (UK & Aus) RCT: incisional neg pressure wound Tx (iNPWT) vs. surgeon choice dressings. Results: 28% SSI rate iNPWT vs. 27.4% surgeon choice These NPWT devices are expensive and don't seem to improve outcomes for this *specific* patient population

What is Superior: Appendectomy or Antibiotics for Appendicitis?🪱🦠 This 11-center RCT thoughtfully addresses this In @thelancet.bsky.social I am grateful to be a part of this big, awesome team led by Shawn St Peter www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

Agree with this thread. Any surgeon or anesthesiologist will know how potentially dangerous this policy would be (and how little it reflects what actual medical care looks like).

A meaningful piece (2023) that I have come back to many times from @nytimes.com. Amy Silverstein talks about dying with her transplanted heart, limitations of transplant medicine, and the “gratitude paradox”. A challenge to medical science and human compassion. 💔 www.nytimes.com/2023/04/18/o...

Unless Congress acts in the next three weeks, Medicare will stop covering telehealth. For people too sick to leave home for months, including millions who have been disabled by Covid, this will mean losing all access to healthcare. Please sign this petition urging your representatives to act

One of my heroes growing up was Carl Sagan. And a favorite is his book - “The Demon Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark”. Science is the most precious thing. A few eye opening passages in the images. The book was written in 1995. #ScienceSky #MedSky #SurgSky

Guidelines are necessary but only as good as the constantly evolving evidence used to create them. And they can only work if you use them as intended #ERAS #medsky www.clinicalnutritionjournal.com/article/S026...

A growing problem --- fake papers polluting systematic reviews. And interesting point that the gold-standard protocols that Cochrane is developing to weed out untrustworthy studies, are too much of an effort for systematic-review authors looking at 100s of papers. www.science.org/content/arti...

A new study in PNAS (N>20k) confirms women’s pain is taken less seriously than that of men, with women being less likely to receive pain meds and waiting 30 minutes longer to be seen in the ED. Sadly, the same reasons we treat women poorly in our society translate to how we treat women patients.
