1729 Prize Update 1/3

A letter from our founding editor Ian Anderson

We have received questions about our stance on Israel-Palestine so we wanted to make this clear: We stand with Palestinian people and condemn the actions of Israel—and the complacency of the US government—for what we believe is the ongoing genocide of Palestinian people.

check it out!! love to see @older.bsky.social's ...AND OTHER DISASTERS on this truly fabulous list!

HAPPY BOOK DAY, BROOKE!! Don’t miss out on this stellar, prize-winning novel! “This luminous novel of big heart and span is a wonder. I am changed for having read it. The story has become part of my soul.” — Diane Zinna, author of The All-Night Sun grab a copy! masonjarpress.com/chapbooks-1/...

"These are stories for our future as well as a reflection of our present: from an AI built for empathy to an anthropologist who returns to Earth to study the dying civilizations. These stories will defy your expectations as well as inspire you to think deeply about the world around you."

Happy Pub Day, Tager!! This collection rocks & so do you ⚡⚡⚡⚡

Hello, friends! The 1729 Prize announcement will be delayed until April 15th (hopefully sooner). There's a variety of factors for this delay and we're happy to share if you'd like more info, but the short version is:

you've likely heard about SPD closing & still have questions (we certainly do). rest assured, we're working on detangling what this means for us going forward. the heart of things remains the same though: support & celebrate small presses however you can

10/10 since SPD bombed, how about a list of presses that that would love it if you bought books from them rn? I’d be remiss not to end with the great @masonjarpress.bsky.social (and they’re in Baltimore, you’re kinda obligated this week) masonjarpress.com

Y'all, I'm a really good doodler. Plus you get a UK edition!

happy birthday Molly Brodak 🎈

I have to mail 100 book packages at USPS tomorrow for the @masonjarpress.bsky.social I talked to the manager who said “can you drop them off with your credit card and we’ll contact you when they’re ready?” I was like, sure!! He said, “umm, most people aren’t so trusting.”

This is so good.

lmao a few years ago Straczynski blocked me on twitter when I asked if Octavia Butler was still the only non-white writer in it, and now I don't even see her mentioned. "Keep science fiction white and male" is a dangerous vision all right, but only in the most boring way imaginable

love this thread ⚡

hot take: books are awesome

5.5 more hours in the Locus Auction! Go check it out! Rare first edition of Children of Dune, Tuckerizations by Scalzi & Doctorow, Tiara by Sara Felix, Voicemail by Neil Gaiman, limited editions from Brandon Sanderson and Ted Chiang, art by Donato!! locus.betterworld.or...

“Before gay marriage was legal, illustrator John Megahan was called to work on a revolutionary secret project: bringing to life, in painstaking scientific detail, the queer lives of the animal world.” The book was called “Biological Exuberance,” which is a very good title.

Something fun: I had the joy of being on a panel for my alma mater #MountHolyoke a couple of weeks ago: Women Shaping Media with Martha Little and Tracy Gilchrist. We talked about our career paths, the state of journalism, publishing, AI and more! #AuntieEditor kaltura.mtholyoke.edu/media/Storie...

Sooo.... is everybody in publishing kinda terrified all the time now, or is it just me?

seconded!!!

Get the library card and then use it, too -- sometimes library funding can be tied to or affected by circulation numbers.

Artists hopping on bluesky once in a blue moon to promote something, no one's responding to your self promotion because you aren't cultivating community on this platform. You just dip in & out & don't forge bonds.

Yall talking about the internet being down I am reading a book

Semi-recently read Poe's PYM and Mat Johnson's PYM back to back and I highly recommend this, the experience is absolutely hilarious. I was going to write an essay about it but frankly, Johnson's book kind of incorporates that essay already. If I do write about this, it's gonna be about shoggoths tho

the sun is out & Meta's down, lets celebrate with a book 🎉

Imagine if this wasn't a glitch and Facebook was actually sinking into the ocean beside Atlantis. RIP to one of the worst to ever do it.
