The new US leaders seem to have failed to realise “run the government as a business” really means “run the country as a business”. A business must train its employees to to their job. A country needs to educate everyone, often for roles that aren’t paid and jobs that don’t exist yet.

This timely reminder from Carole Cadwalladr. ⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️

Possible fundraiser opportunity / opportunity for some good natured hilarity. My Captain's Hat is dying. I have a lot of field work coming up. I will wear (almost) any hat, provided you: A) Send me the hat B) Donate to an ocean conservation charity. Interested? Let's chat. DMs open.

Conservatives prefer the past. Progressives have hope the future. The political contest used to be over the majority in the centre, who were broadly okay with how things are right now. That centre has diminished, because folks are sad or angry about the now, whether or not it’s actually terrible.

He’s going to pay Egypt to take the Palestinians, repair the walls around Gaza, and build his own Monaco to rule. A new Age of Colonialism is upon us. www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/5...

Hey Canada, here’s an idea. Agree to join the USA under two conditions: 13 states, not one; and require that a formal method to leave the Union is added to the Constitution before you join. Then withdraw at the last minute (blame Quebec) and watch California and Texas secede.

Crazy #skeletoncrew idea - all the kids’ parents pull out red lightsabers and it all turns #runaways for S2

Those last scenes of C3 E118 felt like they were deciding the fate of Campaign 4 Exandria in real time. Obviously the deities, but maybe also the system? The fungal species on Ruidus have a Daggerheart vibe.

Imagine: gun owners pay a tax for treating gunshot wounds; car owners pay a tax for treating injuries from traffic accidents; smokers pay for respiratory illnesses for everyone around them; schools pay for mental illnesses of kids who don’t learn the way the curriculum teaches.

But how will they remember their heritage?

Billionaire isn't actually a competency

I'm at the National Assembly building. The army is here. And I just saw two soldiers in fatigues getting pushed around by belligerent ajusshis. and they looked legit scared.

"We cannot continue to participate in the social network feed of a man who proclaims the death of the media and therefore of journalists... X is a platform that no longer serves the public interest at all, but the special ideological and financial interests of its owner and his political allies"

NZ is out of step from our peer countries in not having Capital Gains or Inheritance Taxes. Both target the asset-wealthy and should be a good match for traditional labour values. But getting out the youth vote is vital, as they are the ones who should benefit. www.rnz.co.nz/news/politic...

Every time conservatives say “centralising is more cost effective”, what they really mean is “my golf buddy has a catering business and he says he’ll do it cheaper”. They ignore the local employment benefits entirely. www.1news.co.nz/2024/12/02/f...

Subtitles aren’t just for deaf or hard of hearing players. They’re important for players in loud environments (who can’t use headphones), non-native speakers who rely on text to follow dialogue, and many neurodivergent folks who struggle to focus or process audio quickly. Just to mention few.

National and the Coalition's plan for New Zealand #nz #nzpol #atlas #privatisation So it can be "privatised" and the public can be sharecroppers for the corporations.

We all think plastic pollution is a problem, and it is. In the nearly 70 years between 1950 and 2019, the world produced a total of ~9.5 billion tonnes of plastic. But all the plastic we have EVER produced weighs as much as CO₂ we emitted into the atmosphere during the first three months of 2024!

Some people think the world should neatly divide into the little boxes they learned in childhood. Dude: the universe just isn’t that simple, and it will not bend to your will.

Imagine the world if we’d been willing to learn from COVID… What if we’d embraced WFH to slow climate change? What if we’d installed filtration systems in public buildings to reduce the spread of illness? What if we’d demanded disability justice re long COVID? A better world is still possible.

Given the chance, I’d spend the next 5 years researching the role of Tricksters across history and what they say about the society they emerge from. As an agent of change, they are reviled by autocrats and admired by the oppressed.

Pretty crazy someone can be charged federally with interfering in an election and those charges get dropped because they win an election.

A Brief History of People Have Lost Their Sense of Humour 🧵

Drove from Wellington to Auckland yesterday. It took about 11 hours with regular rest stops. But NZ really turned on the charm for the trip.

There can only be one me. Help me let @bsky.app be aware that I’m the real me. Many thanks, Mar🐫 🙏 ♥️ 👍
