Looks like the Open GIS data page for the BIA is missing when I try to access it on my machines. I see it on Wayback on Feb 1. Anyone able to confirm? #GIS #OpenData

Was trying to install Windows 11 on this laptop, and the stupid thing couldn't see my SSD. The advices I read suggested to try changing a whole bunch of settings in BIOS, find drivers etc. So I decided screw it and installed Linux (Mint, because I haven't tried it before). Smooth sailing.

I feel like I'm going insane every time I see a media story about DOGE that doesn't also mention the fact that the Government Accountability Office exists and performs the exact function that DOGE pretends to, only in a credibly constitutional, non-partisan, and conflict-of-interest-free manner

Anytime a storm is brewing, your local forecasters are getting the latest data from NOAA. As the agency faces an uncertain future, one thing's for sure: for-profit companies would struggle to replicate NOAA's weather-forecasting prowess.

When, in “Back Street Kids,” Ozzy sings “nobody I know will ever take my rock and roll away from me,” he allows for the possibility that someone he doesn’t know will someday do it. A lamentable prospect

We collectively haven’t been taking the plans laid out by Project 2025 seriously enough. They want to destroy NOAA so people won’t know that climate change is happening. It sounds stupid and alarmist if you haven’t been paying attention.

Musk has sicced his followers on the WSJ writer who reported on a DOGE staffer’s racist online, history demanding her firing. This is a tactic Silicon Valley’s neoreactionaries have been advocating for years: Pick a reporter, dox and harrass, make an example of them, make everyone else afraid.

DOGE is reportedly threatening NOAA with massive staff and budget cuts. NOAA houses the National Weather Service and National Hurricane Center, which produce forecasts and warn people about storms. This attack on public safety is ripped straight from the pages of Project 2025.

The Trump Administration's list of censored scientific terms that get NSF grant proposals flagged contains "women” and “female”, but no mention of “men” or “male.” There is “black” and “indigenous” on this list, but no “white.” The only identity not censored is mine. youtu.be/dHXbpj1Z3UU

It is notable that Big Law is completely absent from the legal fights to protect democracy. In 2017, they bragged about their pro bono work for the resistance. Now, they are silent -presumably cowering in fear of Trump and Musk. Support the non-profit law orgs and small firms doing this hard work.

minor in the scheme of things but wow who could have guessed that a guy who was one of the smarmiest and most sanctimonious people in the senate was also corrupt www.alligator.org/article/2025...

I honestly believe our most powerful position in a toxic time that feeds on cynicism, apathy,& despair is to genuinely care and act for a better world. Cynicism is our enemy. We should check it, incl. on the left. It’s not intellectually superior. It’s the virus they’re trying to infect us with. NO

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

SUNDAY'S FUNDAY QUIZ! I am in the UK to promote DreamWorks' critically-acclaimed new animated movie: THE [ ] ROBOT A) RILED B) CHILD C) REVILED D) MILD E) None of the above Answer: E It's actually The WILD Robot- wonderful for ALL ages & currently at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes!!! 👀 ♥️ 👍

The Washington Post is spreading the extremely dangerous and false anti vaxx “immunity debt” conspiracy theory. This anti vaxx conspiracy has been debunked repeatedly by scientists and yet WaPo continues to push it. Extremely dangerous www.thegauntlet.news/p/with-immun...

Raw milk is one of those ideas that can really only take hold when people haven't seen a cow. if you see a cow from let's say ten feet or less you immediately understand the problem that pasteurization is solving

Thrilled to receive such positive feedback from students in my Introduction to GIS Programming course! Although it's a small in-person class I taught at the University of Tennessee, I've made all lecture materials and video recordings freely available online.

Imagine if we truly came to know this ourselves. Imagine if we came to understand ourselves, not as apart from nature observing it, but a part of nature, in fact, nature ourselves together with the rest of the living biome. Imagine the transformation- the awe, the coherence, and even the joy.

This opening paragraph really made me laugh 🤣
