SRO is trying to reschedule this study section for mid-April but I put the probability on that as <10%. All 38 reviewers free on the same two days? I'm the least important person on the rooster and my April calendar is completely booked. There's a reason these get scheduled six months in advance.

Actually, a measles outbreak IS an unusual occurrence. Especially in a country like the US, which had eliminated the disease thanks to vaccination until recently. It's so unusual that most physicians in the U.S. have NEVER seen a case! www.nbcnews.com/now/video/-i...

Complying with EOs now means the Trump regime doesn’t have to legislate. Make them pass the damned laws.

Read the room, Nature.

You make me sad, NASEM.

It's interesting to see which law schools are not represented in this letter challenging the DEI EO and Dear Colleague Letter: app.box.com/s/2me4mszr6p...

I tracked 23.5 hours reviewing grants for a study section that was scheduled for tomorrow and Friday (now cancelled). If it ever meets, I'll get $200 for 16 more hours of my time, which comes out to ~1 cup of coffee per hour. Almost certainly less than the coffee I consumed to get the reviews done.

Working on a paper and got deja vu when reviewing some code... then remembered I write this shiny app for infectious disease models over a decade ago: mkiang.shinyapps.io/DiseaseDynam...

My kid goes to a very liberal private school in very liberal SF and even they do not mandate the COVID vaccine. This isn't about the COVID vaccine -- it's just another step in their plan to remove *all* vaccine mandates.

Sometimes, I'll be doing a task and it'll dawn on me that if I just do a really bad job, they'll stop asking me to do that task. Then for some reason, I'll still do a not-bad job.

They capped the NIH indirect cost. This isn't a surprise — they very literally said they would do this last year. That our institutions didn't have a plan and seem unequipped to fight back is... disappointing.

Is there a mirror of US Census TIGER/Line files somewhere? None of the downloads work from the official website.

Well, I got an official notice that my DP2 will not be funded... but at least that means the NIH is communicating again?

Maturing is going from using torrents to download movies and music to using torrents to download CDC data.

Nancy's classic (now 22 years old!) "Child Abuse" paper seems especially relevant as data used to study inequities gets taken down from government websites. ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/full/10....

Mourning the loss of a public health legend: Len Syme, renowned as the father of social epidemiology, died at 92 this week. A UC Berkeley professor emeritus and beloved mentor, he revolutionized #PublicHealth with his focus on #SocialDeterminantsofHealth. ow.ly/mAF450UP32f #UCBerkeley

🧵 1/N Our new study on the strength and durability of indirect protection from vaccines and infection-acquired immunity against SARS-CoV-2 is published this week in @naturecomms.bsky.social! We find that both vaccines and infection-acquired immunity reduce transmission to close contacts.

New research led by #StanDOM's Nathan Lo & Sophia Tan, published in Nature Communications, explores indirect protection—how both vaccine-derived & infection-acquired immunity can reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2 to close contacts. youtu.be/14oeiVauuBU Read the full study here: go.nature.com/40SINOG

I mean what's the point in having the best law school in the country if you're not going to challenge legally ambiguous orders that clearly go against your institution's best interest?

Every ECR text group right now...

I mean... this is how I cope.

My child is selling Girl Scout cookies which actually means I am selling Girl Scout cookies.

Excited to share results from a 4-year first-ever RCT across US jails. We (Crystal Yang & I) find that death rates are much higher in jails than officially reported & health care accreditation improves staff coordination, quality & save lives. www.nber.org/papers/w33357

Almost got run over the other day. He had a memorable license plate so I looked it up when I got home and found out he had over 20 parking violations in 2024 alone! This, obviously, sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole. For example, did you know SF issues ~5000 citations a day?

Academics from poorer socio-economic backgrounds are more likely to - not publish - have outstanding publication records - introduce more novel scientific concepts - less likely to receive recognition, as measured by citations, Nobel Prize nominations, and awards. www.nber.org/papers/w33289

I was inspired by @lisahornung.bsky.social to try to generate my own "Year in Review" using the Strava API, R, and ggplot. Needs some work and a lot of polish but I think the bulk of the code is there.

Work with Ayesha at @berkeleypopcenter.bsky.social on super cool projects around human mobility, climate change, and infectious diseases!
