On February 10 immediately after 5.5 hours of birding on Blumine island, we were greeted by 5 orcas in the sound off Picton, NZ 🦑

A special (and very brief!!) viewing of an Australasian Swamphen (Pūkeko) with some youngsters! 🪶

Dude's talking like he got one of his neuralink chips implanted in his brain lmfao.

The endangered New Zealand Sea Lion, the rarest sea lion in the world. Seen around Stewart Island/Rakiura. 🦑

The ABA is deeply concerned by recent staff reductions in U.S. federal agencies tasked with the stewardship of American’s lands, waters, and wildlife, including wild birds. These actions have real world implications for the wellbeing of wild birds, particularly those facing extinction bit.ly/3Xc4BCK

In 2024, the NLRB filed a complaint against Tesla for interfering in a union drive at their Buffalo, NY assembly plant. Today:

Around the shores of inland lakes of the South Island of New Zealand you'll likely find lots of Black-billed Gulls, like this handsome one at Lake Rotoiti in Tasman. This one also has a band on its right leg. 🪶

A Little Penguin / Kororā floating on the ocean water, flipper relaxed on its side. Seen on a cloudy morning on February 10, 2025 in Queen Charlotte Sound / Tōtaranui off Picton. 🪶

Having seen red-crowned and orange-fronted parakeets, we really hoped to spot a yellow-crowned parakeet. On our last day out of 5 in their suitable habitat, in the final 100m of hiking after ~30km across the week, one was finally spotted at the forest edge of the trail. Delighted! 🪶

Closeup of a Northern Giant Petrel. Up there for the meanest, toughest looking animal species I've ever seen. Nearly the size of an albatross, these birds scavenge marine mammal carcasses, kleptoparasitize other birds, capture small fish/krill/squid, or even hunt and drown smaller birds. 🪶

Back home from New Zealand! Long night, reliving Saturday again and definitely feel it lol. Still need to review for confirmations, but saw roughly 65 new native or endemic species in NZ! The final species, the critically endangered Black Stilt. 🪶

Came out to like $75 NZD oof lol

Repost for valentines back home

+ 4 more not picture = one sore hand and one expensive trip to the post tomorrow 😅

Since families have finally been told, got engaged this trip (2/2) too! 🥳

Orange-fronted Parakeet on Blumine Island. This critically endangered species is dependent on predator-free islands free of invasive mammals like so many endemic New Zealand birds. 🪶

As an alumni, it is WILD to see such blatant lies from the same institution that taught you how to identify propaganda. UCLA, this is what actual violence looks like and you absolutely failed in protecting your students from it dailybruin.com/2024/05/06/o...

If UCLA was concerned about violence, they would have intervened when peaceful protesters were attacked last spring. I spent 15 years at UCLA but haven't trusted them ever since I saw that violence on TV and police shooting protesters the next day, with my former classroom in the background.

Alleged "violence" is bad when you're protesting, but investing in arms dealers supplying bombs being dropped on civilians around the globe is completely fine and dandy. Shameless chancellor, just like the last.

Leaving the wonderful South Island tomorrow morning for one night in Auckland before AA 82 back to Los Angeles on Saturday. My favorite day on the South Island was visiting Marlborough Sounds out of Picton where the wildlife was nothing short of outstanding.

Salvin's Albatross off the coast of Kaikōura 🪶

View last night was stunning.
