GCSE Mathematics grade distributions in November exams by awarding body; for the English boards, it certainly seems to be the case that the lower the grade boundaries, the higher the grade 4+ pass rate. Probably not the way to interpret things, but I can see why many do.

Percentage of marks needed for a grade 4 at Foundation tier in GCSE Mathematics, November 2024: AQAMaths 65%, PearsonEdexcel 59%, Eduqas 45%, OCR_Maths 43%. If I was Ofqual, I’d be concerned about that range, but I think AQA’s boundaries are about where they all should be.

Congratulations to the 16,000 or so students who achieved Grade 4 or above in their GCSE Maths in November, most of them getting there for the first time. Remember them next summer when the post-16 pass rate is lamented once again!

Of the “forgotten third” who don’t achieve Grade 4 or above in GCSE Maths each summer, about a fifth resit in November. Join me on Thursday for a round up of grade boundaries and distributions to see what might be learned about the “forgotten fifteenth” when results are released.
