Seeing a looooot of takes and: - if you can move on from Unity you should. Just cus they've proven themselves iffy and closed source limits your options. - Unreal is fine if you like it. It has source. Worst case you branch off. - Don't bare metal your own tech. Start with Godot. Saves ya time.

new article. it's about what cozy and wholesome games are, why shitty people like them, and why I really liked I Was A Teenage Exocolonist. docseuss.medium.com/i-was-a-teen...

David Zaslav, like so many other execs in creative industries and beyond, can’t imagine that something can be thriving and essential if it’s not growing exponentially forever.

This coming year I want to start research for my next book on games development. I had thoughts about looking into games specific project management process, worker cooperatives structures, why games fail, or the past few years of industry layoffs. What do you see being the most beneficial?

My manifesto is "Things aren't as bad as they seem, despite the fact that people aren't as good as they seem."

Opinion: Google's latest AI innovation offers a putrid vision of game development

The most satisfying part of teaching has to be hearing from past students seeking advice, asking for references, or even just reaching out to say hello. Really makes you realize that you had a positive enough impact that well after they graduated they still think of you when they need support.

I'm not trying to be super dour tonight, but these jobs are not coming back anytime soon. We're years and years away from a major rebound. Plan accordingly. Hold out hope, don't give up, but no shame in work outside the industry to stay afloat. Whatever your rainy day plan is, it's fucking pouring.

I love Outer Wilds fans, because where other fandoms can backseat the hell out of you when you stream their favourite games, for Outer Wilds fans every day is shut the fuck up Friday, they'll all watch you fuck about and let you find out.

This is where I'm plotting my downfall

My single greatest hope for this massive wave of studio closures is that maybe please I am begging you do not make the mission statement of your next studio "to make really good games for diverse every persons" Pick something! Aim for anything! Have an identity other than We Will Take Your Money

Tom Cardy's "Red Flags" is a retelling of Meat Loaf's "I'd Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" for a modern society that has not only normalised but glorified the act of eating ass. In this essay I will

Master and Main are outdated default branch names.

The work that inspired Great Games Need Great Leaders really came out of my Masters, where I interviewed leaders from the games industry to get a better picture of what good, sustainable leadership looks like. And despite our present circumstances, it gives me hope for the future of our industry.

series where i sit down with people who made games i don't like and we talk about the decisions that made them. the idea would be that with a respectful dialogue, we might learn interesting things about each others' processes. maybe we'll change our minds as we reconsider things. or we kill each oth

Its worth noting that coverage of games industry layoffs has slowed significantly - This is definitely NOT because layoffs have slowed! It seems more likely that its due to the layoffs have extended to those covering industry news. Its so hard to keep this up to date lately.

Possibly my favourite chapter to write of Great Games Need Great Leaders was about Culture, told through the lens of Valve's flat studio structure and wheeled desks that are specifically noted in their employee handbook.

Let me show my hand as a narrative designer: It's all narrative all the time whether you intend it to be or not. Mechanics are not just abstract tools, they mean and imply things too

The biggest selling point I've heard for going and getting my PhD is being able to call myself Dr Game Dad.

Earnest post, but: a thing I like here is it’s okay to have moments of happiness in public without being broadly scolded, and I believe that sustaining this kind of humanity will be very important as we resist fascism. We have to sustain each other. Making joy isn’t denial, it’s how we will survive

Whale watching with my partner over the weekend. Really nice escape after the past week.

Walz is like the one person from this I'm not faulting. Because he came off as the one person who felt genuine in this whole thing. His presence, his openness, and feeling like the one person left who was still calling Republicans who they really were. By the end he felt the exception, not the rule.

I’m going to throw a book recommendation out there today for Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba’s book, LET THIS RADICALIZE YOU. It is a fantastic resource for learning to organize, creating communities of care, and mutual aid. At the very root of it, all we have is each other. Take care of yourselves 💜

Don't give up on your Crewmates. Keep doing what you can. We've donated to: ➡️ American Foundation for Suicide Prevention: afsp.org ➡️The Trevor Project: www.thetrevorproject.org

I have this need apparently to be doing projects outside of the job that I'm working. Looking ahead, I'd love to do more research and writing on the games industry. Possibly as part of a PhD since I'm probably a career academic at this point. But I also have game ideas I want to pursue.

It's chilling how accurately Rorty predicted this moment in the 90s, but he also predicted that it would eventually pass in a phase of social movement change analogous to emancipation. Fingers crossed, eh?

Banning under-16s from social media, aside from a policy that gives up on making social media a better place for everyone, is a powerfully bad example of patriarchally making laws that impact on people without including them in the process.

It's so funny it hurts #production #gamedev

I’m gonna wake up and keep trying to do good and so are you and no one gets to vote on that.
