The greatest defensive wrestler of all time, Yoshiaki Fujiwara.

Thanks for everyone who took a look at this even with the technical difficulties. Of course, here's what Dave had to say about the Island Death Match... I hope people get to see the expressions and effort for themselves.

UPDATE: I tried! 25 clips and everything but because of the blood, gore, violence, and sheer drama, it gives the adult warning after the second or third post and you have to do lots of extra clicking. Ah well. bsky.app/profile/matt...

THREAD🤼‍♂️: The Island Death Match (10/04/87): Antonio Inoki vs Masa Saito is one of the most remarkable wrestling matches ever. It was a stunt to boost flagging ratings and runs over 90 minutes as the sun sets. I'm going to give some sense of it in 25 clips, starting with Inoki walking from his tent.

Randy Savage working through some big emotions after Hogan joined the NWO.

Come for a serenely goofy Murdoch stooge sell. Stay for one of my favorite Andre the Giant moments of all time.

I want to do a giant thread of clips for the island death match like I did for 8/8/88. Someone hold me to that.

Fighting the Gaspar Pirates (At this point, Bob Orton, Jr. and Karl Moffat) let the 1988 NJPW crowd get behind Vader at least a little. He finishes one off here with the Meteorite Super Vader Attack and then gets excited about it as only he can.

Here's a pretty great Bobby Heenan promo that you've almost certainly never seen.

Bring the smoke. Feel the power.

One more bit of counter programming for everyone. Here's the NEW vs NOW 5x5 from 10/6/87. It doesn't reach the level of some of the others but still fun. www.youtube.com/watch?v=72Y4...

And screw it, it's a pirate radio weekend. Here's the whole match: youtu.be/cJkchHs10Yc

From a Fujinami/Koshinaka vs Choshu/Hase tag from 88. Just a great look at how far Koshinaka had come along and how much he "got it" by 88 after spending a few years trying to come out from under the shadow of what Tiger Mask had done in years' past. He encapsulates the NJPW 80s spirit here.

Here’s a Vader vs Bigelow match for anyone who wants it too. youtu.be/PT4hIj5umxM?...

Should have posted this earlier but if anyone wants some counter-programming tonight, here's Fujinami Army vs Choshu Army from 9/12/88 (#3 DVDVR NJPW 80s set). It's not going to be up forever so use it now to cleanse your palette from the WWE slop you're consuming. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fhpz...

There's so much that makes Fujinami great, but his fight here and the look on his face as he struggles against adversity is very close to the top of the list.

Great bit from the 9/12/88 5x5 as Super Strong Machine is ready for Fujiwara's signature Crab escape, but not quite ready enough.

This is from a lost 9-5-88 NJPW hh. It's the IWGP champ and Jr. champ up against the Tag Champs. If you want to see the spirit of classic NJPW in a clip, this is it. Shiro Koshinaka, lowest on the hierarchy, a junior punching up defiantly, surviving deadly holds through heart and spirit alone.

Love this sell by Kuniaki Kobayashi after a Yamada (Liger) Tombstone. Not sure I ever saw it done quite that way.
