Full day at Kew planned tomorrow - may have ordered more documents than I can reasonably get through in a day (again). If any of my Bsky friends are at the National Archive tomorrow, say Hi!

Where has Angus Calder been all my life? Wonderfully written account of the Home Front 1939-45. Written in 1969, Calder rewrote his take on the Blitz later in life. Regardless, it's a damn good read. #histbookchat #photofriday

Library #histbookchat offering this week is Crang's The British Army and the People's War, which includes a particularly good chapter on Army Welfare. Reinforces what I'm seeing in primary sources - middle-ranking officers were more of a blocker to reform than the Col Blimps. Use your library.

Another great episode by @mikehistorian.bsky.social and @johanntasker.bsky.social - Operation Tidal Wave.

If you can see this, post a GIF from one of your comfort shows.

Singer, actor, nurse, and a figurehead for French Resistance, Germaine Sablon's name should be more familiar. I write about her distinguished service during the SWW in this week's post: open.substack.com/pub/matteato... #skystorians

"Cannabis-laced marmalade", now that's a breakfast I can get behind

Delving into RAF Gang Shows via Ralph 'Riding on the Crest of the Wave' Reader's autobiography. Lovely to read stories of Peter Sellars, Tony Hancock, Dick Emery, but what really fascinates me is the willingness to move mountains to get entertainment to the troops by the top-brass. #histbookchat

Congratulations @claremulley.bsky.social. Well deserved! #histbookchat

The Arts as a Weapon of War - Jörn Weingärtner looks at the history of CEMA in Britain during SWW and the emergence of what became the Arts Council. The blackout had a lot to answer for! #histbookchat
