Any discussion of teams that would be viewed differently today had the wild card existed in their time would have to include the 1980s Mets. From 1984 to 1990—seven seasons—the Mets had 34 more wins than any other MLB team. Pitching was their strength. Their 3.34 FIP led MLB for the sample.

Hall of Fame voters didn't miss the greatness of Eddie Murray or Al Kaline, electing them on the first ballot. But had Mike Piazza, Johnny Mize or Luke Appling actually won an MVP—rather than finishing runner-up twice—they might have had an easier time with Hall voters.

Creedence Clearwater Revival may be the finest American singles band Every household in the U.S. used to have the Chronicle CD Yet, CCR somehow never had a No. 1 hit. Like CCR, here are five Hall of Famers who finished runner-up for MVP twice—but never No. 1 eddymk.substack.com/p/the-ccrs-o...

I kinda miss the Mariners having a left-hander in the rotation, and I believe they should be willing to make the team worse by adding one, to satisfy my needs.

So many great players had their health and durability compromised by the turf that took over the National League, in particular, from the 1970s through ’90s. It's a shame.

It's the hidden value of adding the DH to the National League. Elite catchers get to hit more, provided they don't play on the same team as a dedicated DH. The Contreras brothers have taken advantage of DH availability. Will Smith did before Ohtani arrived.

Just seven players in MLB history have more seasons of hitting .300 with 30 home runs than Mike Piazza. This is just bananas when you consider that Piazza: (1) was a catcher (2) in the National League with no DH availability (3) whose home parks were Dodger Stadium and Shea Stadium

Prospect Promotion Incentive: Maximum chaos scenario: Jasson Dominguez or Jacob Wilson wins American League Rookie of the Year. AJ Smith-Shawver wins the National League award. All are @baseballamerica.com Top 100 Prospects. All are rookie eligible. None is PPI eligible.

A fan called Roman Anthony overrated. MLB's No. 2 prospect promptly hit this 111 mph and 434 feet 😅

The New York Mets have never produced an NL MVP. That's a 63-year drought 😳 But Juan Soto has a chance to change that this season. www.baseballamerica.com/stories/juan...

Juan Soto's combination of youth, talent, durability and apparent fit at Citi Field could help the Mets franchise end its MVP drought. Plus: Assessing MVP-less seasons by all 30 MLB clubs. Spoiler: The Mets don't rank No. 1 in active MVP-less seasons. www.baseballamerica.com/stories/juan...

The complete list of active players with multiple 20-20 seasons in their careers, per @stathead.com I don't think I would have guessed J-Ram at No. 1 if given 10 chances. Also of note: Witt and J-Rod are 3-for-3 in going 20-20. Carroll can join them this season.

If the movie was called Star Warts instead of Star Wars and you spelled it backwards, it would be Straw Rats. No one talks about that.
