This is how you report on Golden Dome. Do its boosters get their say? Yes. But so do the laws of physics. www.sciencenews.org/article/gold...

‘Nothing justifies or explains the war; it is the spasm of a maddened species. You do not feel good to be American. Or victorious.’ David Thomson watches the films of Terrence Malick: www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

“Nakedly authoritarian and retaliatory” — statement from Harvard’s @aaup.bsky.social chapter on the termination of Harvard’s SEVP certification.

A day for the history books: the President of the United States invokes "white genocide," while the Vice President highlights "great replacement" theory, both staples of racist right-wing extremism.

i think it should be a bigger story that the president held a meeting with a foreign head of state where he ranted about the most gutter white supremacist propaganda you can find on the internet

this is the president of the united states repeating unhinged racist propaganda ginned up by the worst white supremacist ideologues on earth

He is not misinformed. They are lying because they think poor people should be immiserated and die, especially if they are minorities, as part of the natural order of things. The state should not seek to upend what God and nature have willed. That is the conservative project.

These fascists are quite literally pitching the Hunger Games for immigrants.

This is a hell of a line to drop into a straight news story “… the cycling lobby — who wields influence at city hall with bureaucrats, elected officials and the media” www.thestar.com/politics/pro...

Yesterday was an extremely good mail day — perfect timing as it was official pub day for @sprucehen.bsky.social ‘s gorgeous new book 💕❄️🎉 #envhist #envhum

This is a powerful statement by one of our foremost social scientists.

Missed this last week. On his way to the DEI-free pastures of the Florida system, Santa Ono removed his signature from the AACU public letter: talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/outgo...

It’s really striking how irregular the bands of mostly men conducting federal immigration enforcement are. They seem to have no particular uniform, they wear a variety of different agency initials on their tactical vests, or none at all, they’re inconsistent about displaying a badge…

You’re allowed to argue that black people and women are genetically inferior. But you’re NOT allowed to argue they are NOT inferior because that’s divisive. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/09/u...

Columbia bylaws state that the president can only send police on campus to arrest protestors after consulting with the university senate. Once again, the president has neglected to follow these rules, which have been in place since 1968.

just so we’re all clear: the reason they keep using dolls as their example is because they’re trying to frame caring about material stuff as feminine and thus inherently shameful

For @nybooks.com I wrote about the "New Weird Fusionism", the union of the conspiracy cultures of right and left that is animating the Trump agenda www.nybooks.com/articles/202...

Amid all the other news, it's easy to become inured to the basic facts here. Öztürk: -Is not accused of committing any crime -Is nonviolent -Was in this country legally -Merely engaged in speech that the administration objects to -Has been locked up for six weeks

If the courts cannot pretty rapidly step in and stop this obvious abuse of public funds to settle political scores, they won’t do a whole lot else to hold against an authoritarian state

Stephen Miller is lying through his teeth. The Supreme Court has emphasized for generations that EVERY person gets due process. Here's none other than Antonin Scalia in 1993: "It is well established that the Fifth Amendment entitles aliens to due process of law in deportation proceedings."

It's been a highlight of the last several years to see this come together. Kudos to Shannon and Susan and many others: www.utoronto.ca/news/indigen...

“Demand for…meaningfully more…15 friends.” Demand for friends. That’s what you’re dealing with. Someone who talks about friend “demand”.

The critics focused on tone because they largely agreed with the right substantively on the race and gender issues in question, but wanted to avoid saying so openly to preserve their social standing and self-image as liberals.

99.9% of Americans won’t hear that Trump killed this program. And at 2,000 additional dead kids or so each year, most people will have no idea what was lost.

A *very* commonly held reactionary populist belief is "we should let addicts kill themselves by letting them overdose and denying them treatment when they do". Like many monstrous conservative beliefs Trump 2.0 is putting it into practice.

One of the most unfortunate cases of vote splitting from the night.

TH is a wearisome troll (book promo: "He’s inhaled second-hand crack smoke on public transit.... And he’s lost count of how many men’s washrooms he’s visited with a free tampon machine") who thinks another JP visit to Rogan is newsworthy. But on Palestine solidarity protests he has been vicious.

A simple but extremely significant point, imo.

Canada's left may be headed for an electoral wipeout. I break it down for the New Statesman. www.newstatesman.com/internationa...

Re “woke” Harvard students: - Nearly 1/2 of Harvard undergrads plan on careers in finance or consulting - Just around 6% plan for jobs in government or non-profits

It is utterly ghoulish how often Homan defaults to mentioning Riley in defense of his fascistic behavior.

one of the greatest letterman performances AND one of the great (greatest?) rock songs of the 2000s youtu.be/SlHrCg67axw?...

Vance's Easter visit to Rome clogged its streets with a 40-vehicle entourage. He also demanded the Coliseum be closed so he and his family could tour it alone. Tourists who properly booked slots in advance got screwed. He's apparently the first to make that demand. Then he didn't bother to show up.

the idea that they are energetic men (always men) of action is core to fascist ideology and I would like to think Brooks is smart enough to know this but...maybe I'm wrong

In 2023, before the Gaza war started, I was asked to write an introduction to a new edition of Edward Said’s Culture and Imperialism. Finally it’s out - part of a nice looking set. I see @lalehkhalili.bsky.social has introduced Covering Islam

Since January, 213 people have been detained at the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit. 90% of those abducted are there because they made a wrong turn and drove onto the bridge by accident. www.npr.org/2025/04/24/n...

I also really appreciate that Hahn takes mass incarceration seriously as a form of "disappearance" in U.S. history. The podcast episode is well worth listening to: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

Gov. DeWine just signed SB1, a law ending “DEI” in Ohio public higher ed. Now that it’s law, U of Toledo just killed the following BA programs: • Africana Studies • Asian Studies • Disability Studies • Middle East Studies • Philosophy • Religious Studies • Women's/Gender Studies And… • Spanish

It's awfully telling that Poilievre can't get there. It could prove to be an incredible own-goal, but it also says so much about who he is.

lies that kill children. republicans want to kill your kids

The UK Supreme Court’s transphobic ruling on the definition of woman last week is a defeat for all women—even, ultimately, the self-described feminists celebrating it, and the women who will gain in the short term from their alliance with the carceral state. my latest for @thenation.com
