i'm watching a group of conservative law professors insist that there is a grand debate over birthright citizenship that somehow escaped generations of scholarship and only popped into existence after a right-wing president announced an effort to nullify the 14th amendment.

It's truly wild how many times, with so many carrots and so many sticks, the government has told me (and so many other public servants) unequivocally: we want you to leave your job.

"The prospect of replacing federal workers who handle critical tasks—ones that could result in life-and-death scenarios for hundreds of millions of people—with automated systems that can’t even perform basic speech-to-text transcription without making up large swaths of text, is catastrophic."

us government went from telling miners “learn to code” to telling coders “learn to mine” in less than ten years

There's a saying in law that there's no right without a remedy—if there's no recourse when something happens to you, then you don't have a right to have that thing not happen. The President just announced that he believes US citizens don't have a right to not be shipped to a Salvadoran gulag.

THREAD: The Trump administration's DOJ has removed a study from the NIJ website that found that immigrants, and particularly undocumented immigrants, commit crimes at significantly lower rates than U.S. citizens. The study is at odds with the Trump regime's propaganda about immigrants & crime. (1)

Anthropic throwing their lot in with Palantir sure does show how unmoored industry's concept of "AI ethics" is from actual ethics.

Granted this is all about money, but it is wild to see the Wall Street fucking Journal pushing harder than Senate Democrats on Trump www.wsj.com/opinion/trum...

Not to undermine the seriousness of this but it’s wild how often the first external sign of DOGE involvement in an agency is a bizarre email blast.

stop calling things deportation just because they call it deportation. -You cannot legally deport people without due process. -You cannot legally deport citizens. -They are defining down deportation to break the law.

reader, it broke everything

Going to keep saying: a society that wants to keep its basic functioning has to discourage lying. rewarding it instead is suicidal

The thing about sovcits is that *some* of this stuff is not necessarily much weirder than arguments getting purchase with right-wing legal elites www.courtwatch.news/p/the-sovere...

When I was with GSA, every couple of months I’d listen to people calling 844-USA-GOV1, the federal government’s help line. (“This call may be monitored” by me, it turns out.) And my estimate is that 40% of the calls were from people *being scammed*—whether or not they’d realized it yet—seeking help.

Everything is on fire but at least Duke lost

“When overwhelmed unemployment insurance systems malfunctioned…governments blamed the sixty-year-old programming language COBOL. But what really failed?” Just gonna repost this old article about computers, care, labor, and disinvestment in infrastructure for no reason🙃 logicmag.io/care/built-t...

this is a great reminder that there's no such thing as knowing too much to be pwned. last year I got hacked *hard* via a stolen device. i did everything wrong in response, and i knew it was wrong while i was doing it, but i was too panicked to make smart choices. www.troyhunt.com/a-sneaky-phi...

The project of reactionary constitutionalism is the fetishization of the signs, symbols, and ideology of the Confederacy and Jim Crow. For instance, when Kristi Noem was standing in front of the imprisoned men, it was serving the same task of dehumanization as a lynching photo. It is repellant.

Bucky’s gotcha day was yesterday and apparently he decided 3 years together was enough so he tried to get me to squish him

As a web dev, there's really no better cure for imposter syndrome than browsing the web with devtools open and seeing all the errors from everyone else's code

Sometimes I worry life is a little too rich of a tapestry

On one hand they do a good job of making this seem like a decent job at a cool place to work. On the other hand: literally not for all the money in the world.

Our official statement from Albert Sellars LLP on President Trump's recent executive order.

This wasn’t the pic I was trying to take but it contains the revealed truth of Bucky’s whole deal

I fear that I'm going to need to repeat this a lot, so I made a meme.

I saw a job application that asked what percentile you were in math and English in high school. Not an entry-level job, and one that definitely wanted a college degree. Bless their hearts.
