It's been a long time since I did a full written review, but I had a thing or five to say about the rather EXCELLENT Monster Hunter Wilds after 40+ hours with it 😄 #MHWilds

According to @matthewfig.bsky.social the Metal Gear Solid franchise would actually be interesting if we replaced all the characters with Pokemon, and I agree with him.

This week on Checkpoint Chat, there are beasts to hunt out and things to craft from their corpses, with both Matty and Sandy absolutely in love with Monster Hunter Wilds. What's new in the sequel to Capcom's most successful game of all time? Quite a bit actually! #gaming #podcast

My Monster Hunter Wilds lobbies were generally very quiet (expected, given that the game is only with reviewers currently), but I did bump into @gameovergreggy.bsky.social one fine evening. I wasn't 100% sure about "Greggy" initially. That "Portillo" Palico, though? Dead giveaway! 🥹

My Monster Hunter Wilds review will be up on @checkpointchat.bsky.social later this week, but I can leave you all with this in the meantime: IT'S VERY GOOD! After nearly 40 hours with the game, I can confidently say that I'm hooked and I can't stop playing the damn thing 😭

Yeah the Switch Lite is small, but I'd LOVE for Nintendo to do a pocket-sized Game Boy variant one day 🥹

Good morning!

This week on Checkpoint Chat, we check out Microsoft's first big title of the year with Obsidian's Avowed. Is it finally the game to fill the Skyrim-shaped hole in your heart, or has the long wait underdelivered? #gaming #podcast

There are two kinds of people in the world: - Those who make too much mash - Those who make too little mash

My phone, inexplicably, every time I pick it up:

Silksong fans, I want this to be your year.

In honor of Final Fantasy 8 and its 26th anniversary, here's every scene where Squall says "whatever" for you to enjoy. Or don't. Whatever. *thread*

Without looking it up, what's the last video game you remember launching alongside a movie as a tie-in?

I'm over a year late to the party, but I’ve been playing a ton of Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, and damn, this game is surprisingly good! A satisfying grind/gameplay loop, visually stunning, genuinely fun, and, sadly, a prime example of how a rough launch can haunt a title long-term.

We're back and ready to talk about all the latest games like...2024's sleeper hit Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, as well as 2005's own Half-Life 2 (which turned 20 a short while ago). Join us in easing into the new year just before the avalanche of games in February kicks in. #gaming #podcast

If it's not too much to ask, one upgrade I REALLY want on the Switch 2 is faster load times. (And an OLED out the box, please Nintendo 😭)

After 15 hours, I finally made it to (what I assume is) the last boss in Enter the Gungeon. My 1st complete run was within reach! Naturally, I got the big bad down to 10% health, and then died because I panicked. 10/10, roguelikes don't make me angry at all (but I can't stop playing them 😭)

When your one Sim gets ready to take a shower but remembers they have a red carpet ceremony to attend:

SURPRISE, looks like 2024 was another great year for games 🥳 I've had a say on some of my favourites (along with other writers) over on Pfangirl's lovely annual GOTY piece 😊 Be sure to check it out!

Reuters presented this story in a really cool way, check it out

What year is it again?

PROOF OF LIFE POST! Apologies for the radio silence, but it's been a very busy start of year 😅 That said, we are around and should fire up our content machine again sometime in February. Stay tuned, and thank you for bearing with us!

I think we can all agree that the best John Wick movie is Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Your random reminder that Outer Wilds is one of the best games ever made and that you should 100% play it.

You ever sit back and think to yourself, "shit, it's good to be a gamer!" I do, and often. Whether it's for the love of art, skill, narrative, all, or more, we are so spoilt with choice when it comes to the experiences we can dive into 🥹

What it feels like to play any damn healer in Marvel Rivals:

Presented without comment:

I'm playing Half-Life 2 for the first time since it launched (20 years ago... 👴🏻), and let me just say, it's unreal how well it holds up. Sure, some mechanics feel dated, but the pacing, level design, narrative, atmosphere, and general FPS gameplay remain absolutely stellar!

It doesn’t look like there are any drastic changes, so I’m really sad they didn’t roll with the obvious name, Super Nintendo Switch 🥲
