For my ongoing “Story of the Story” series, I have been exploring the inspiration behind and how I wrote the stories in my debut short story collection, Histories Within Us. Today, I talk about my story “Still You Linger, Like Soot in the Air.” matthewkressel.substack.com/p/story-of-t...

Oh gosh, I genuinely do not know what to do; I feel like someone has loaded a machine gun with rainbows and miracles and just unloaded it directly at my chest. Beneath Ceaseless Skies, btw, was the first place ever to publish me, as well as the last. (For now.)

My uninformed hot take: 5 minutes and $100 in a bookstore to gamify book reading in order to grow readers is the absolute wrong direction to move. For me, bookstores are places of contemplative browsing and introspection and deep thought, not mad rushed capitalistic dashes to fill a shopping cart.

Republicans are endangering our troops and national security and stealing your social security and cancer treatment. We will stop them. That's it, there's your brand, Democrats.

Right now I'm ranked #1 on the Duolingo leaderboard for my Yiddish studies, and this means nothing, and democracy is collapsing, and tomorrow I'll be ranked #79, so I'll take every little win I can get.

Think it’s important to highlight how everyday violence of the U.S. criminal legal system is making what ICE is doing possible: this man was convicted of a crime at *16*; he was *pardoned*; when ICE came decades later they claimed the conviction made him a felon w/ no recourse against deportation

In the latest Geeks Guide to the Galaxy podcast, I join panelists Andrea Kail, Rajan Khanna, and host David Barr Kirtley to discuss the HBO Max series Dune Propecy. We have opinions, some strong, and things get heated. Link in thread. @rajanyk.bsky.social

When we post about Fantastic Fiction, it sounds like this.

Here's the audio from this month's Fantastic Fiction at KGB, with Jedediah Berry & Victoria Dalpe. Another fun evening with two great authors! @datlow.bsky.social @victoriadalpe.bsky.social @jedediahberry.bsky.social www.kgbfantasticfiction.org/2025/03/22/a...

My wife works with special needs children for the NYC DOE. I don't understand how folks are cheering with glee at the cutting of funding for our most vulnerable populations. It is, quite simply, inhumane. The GOP is the party of cruelty.

Casar: You can quickly explain Doge with just two numbers. First: $8 million a day. That’s how much Elon Musk collects in federal government contracts. Second: $65 a day. That’s how much the average senior—someone who has worked their entire life—gets from Social Security.…

So because a bunch of morons think mRNA Covid vaccines have nanomachines or 5G in them or something, we have restricted promising research into curing cancer. Tell me again how this is the "pro-life" party?

Tesla is tanking and he's begging his employees to not sell their stocks. His BS magic is gone, and he knows it. As a raging toxic narcissist, expect him to lash out as his popularity continues to wane.

Over on my substack I've been writing little vignettes about each story in HISTORIES WITHIN US. I've done two so far, and the third should be on its way soon. matthewkressel.substack.com/archive

authorsguild.org/news/meta-li... Advice for pirated authors.

Wait, so Libgen is still on Google Play even though it has thousands of pirated books?

Goodreads is giving away 100(!) copies of my debut science fiction, fantasy, and horror short story collection, HISTORIES WITHIN US! You can enter to win a copy here: www.goodreads.com/giveaway/sho...

Euphemism: "due to a lack of staffing" Translation: So that Trump/DOGE and a complicit GOP can unmake the US and appease Putin, they fired extremely necessary national weather service employees who serve *all* Americans regardless of party affiliation. But Americans are waking up.

I don't think the GOP quite understands how pissed off Americans are. Not just in blue states either.

I'm curious to see how SFWA and other writers' organizations will respond to the latest news that Meta has stolen from thousands of authors to train its AI. If there ever was a time for professional organizations to step up, now would be it.

When do the lawsuits begin? Sign me up

Dozens of my stories and books are in there. Time for a class action lawsuit. I definitely did NOT give them permission.

For my ongoing “Story of the Story” series, I talk about how I wrote “The Meeker and the All-Seeing Eye," and the hidden message in the story of how one can identify weaknesses and use them to fight entrenched power structures. Línk in thrēâd

The photos are here! Here are Ellen's and David's and my photos from this month's Fantastic Fiction reading series at the KGB Bar, with guests Jedediah Berry & Victoria Dalpe. Both read from their novels to a very full house! @jedediahberry.bsky.social @datlow.bsky.social @victoriadalpe.bsky.social

Let's please stop calling them "hallucinations" and call them what they really are: errors. Heinous errors that any human would easily notice as wrong, but which LLMs gleefully spit out.

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

My fiction is always 100% authentically human.
