Shed hunting in northeastern Iowa in an attempt to clear my head of grief. Didn’t work, but getting outdoors, searching and focused, is where I needed to be.

Cool primates of Borneo. #mammalwatching

Annual reminder to myself that even though I'll never win an Oscar, I have caught several.

One of my favorite wildlife watching memories…running through the Bornean forest in search of a wild orangutan.

Osborne Nature Center in northeastern Iowa.

Ferox Trout - it is native to lakes/lochs of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. It feeds largely on Arctic char. It is considered a separate species from the Brown Trout. It can reach a maximum length of 80 cm(31 in). www.redbubble.com/shop/ap/3942...

Herring spawns are very cool because everyone in a hundred miles comes to eat delicious herring roe and/or herring in relatively contained area.

FINALLY saw my bucket list (and very first) Wild American Crocodile!!! Amazing visit to Everglades National Park🐊

#RodentOfTheDay North American Brown Lemming (Lemmus trimucronatus) "Lemmings are a brown in colour, with an reddish-brown back and rump, while the head and shoulders are grey. In the winter, the coat becomes longer and greyer." Photo/Info: animalia.bio/north-americ...

The northern pikeminnow is one of the most reviled fish in the Pacific Northwest. In a familiar narrative, pikeminnows wrongly get the blame for salmon declines while dams are ignored. #flyfishing

Your field guide to weird noises in the night. t/

Pair of Florida Gars swim among the cypress trees in the Everglades; we got to walk right alongside them! Our National Parks are incredible and MUST be protected; our federal workers are integral to natural resource conservation!

On a rainy & gray Boise day, a wahoo memory.

Love these little native Brook Trout. #flyfishing #flyfish #wisconsin #nativetrout #wildtrout #flytying

Entertaining myself during an on-campus staff meeting by keeping tabs on the various euphemisms being used instead of directly talking about the uncertainty: "the current times" "the present climate" "the political landscape" and my favorite so far: "the things that are maybe coming"

Lost then found, my news to me good news for Feb 24 #EarthOptimism #BeyondTheObituaries abcnews.go.com/Internationa...

An important, gut-wrenching, infuriating book. As an Eagle Scout, I was lucky to never experience this abuse. But, even as a kid fully involved in Scouts, I recognized an unhealthy culture. I valued the outdoor experiences but not the bullying & irresponsible adult supervision of scout camp.

How long did it take you to see this Florida Gar hiding in the Everglades?

I need more of this in my life...

Wrapping up my 14th trip to Yellowstone National Park, one of my favorite places. The story of the National Park Service here is one of conservation successes & significant errors & learning from both. I never fail to be inspired by the wildlife, the geology & the conservation history.

Want to add to your favorite outdoor sport, whether it’s hiking or fishing or kayaking? Try birding.

Old Faithful in winter, when the bison outnumber the humans.

When the spray from a geyser freezes & accumulates it can create a “ghost tree,” like this one overlooking Lake Yellowstone.

West Thumb Geyser Basin, Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone Lake. A kingdom of isolation.

Trumpeter swans.

What a great story! The introduction alone is well worth reading.

Evening bison.

Madison River, Yellowstone National Park.

Snow & hot water. Yellowstone National Park.

As a foreigner, I've found claims of American exceptionalism to mostly fall short in most areas. But not the parks. The parks are the best in the world. The most breathtaking, the most well-maintained, the most accessible and affordable. Please don't harm them.

Firehole River, Yellowstone National Park.

Anemone geyser with thriving bacterial mats. Life in the extremes.

Fun blog post on a new snakehead slime project out of my lab! Thanks for the write-up @matthewlmiller.bsky.social! blog.nature.org/2025/02/16/t... 🐟🐡🐙

Good to see Yellowstone’s freshwater biodiversity celebrated at the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center (West Yellowstone, Montana).

Ermine encounter. So cool to get up close to this small-but-might predator while Nordic skiing in Yellowstone. #mammalwatching
