I think for the US’s erstwhile “allies”, to ever trust it again will take a massive domestic rebuke of #Trump, #Musk and #Hegseth.

The US, Russia, and the richest man in the world who is busy carrying out a coup in our government, are coordinating a brutal shakedown of an ally whose very existence depends on our support. This is repulsive and people need to understand we’re only in the beginning of what is possible.

It’s imperative at this point that Europe develop a defense posture independent of the United States, which should be treated as the ally of Russia that it has now become.

President Zelenskyy has been one of the greatest leaders of our time, guiding Ukraine through the darkest period of its recent history, rising up to Russia’s unwarranted aggression, being an inspiration to the Ukrainian people and ensuring that Ukraine’s voice is heard on the world stage.

The past ten years has just been the same clutch of morons and apologists insisting that Trump would never cross that line and then shuffling along with him to insist that he would never cross that next one.

Mein Fuehrer! I can walk!

Carving the world up between them is what #Russia and #China have long wanted, and #Trump wants to join in. We’re back to 19th century great power politics and ‘spheres of influence’. This will end very, very badly.

Yeah. I wonder whatever happened to the ongoing FBI counter-intelligence investigation on #Trump-Russia that Robert #Mueller referenced? 🧐

I don’t know about you, but I’m shocked - shocked - that the #NeverTrump people were absolutely 100% right about the President. #Trump #Quisling

I'm afraid Wikipedia may soon have to update the "Supported by" section.

Interesting to listen to Jeremy Bowen on BBC R4 PM draw upon experience reporting from countries with longstanding UN peacekeeping operations. Says they often get “overrun” by powerful states and have been forced to “stand aside”. Only NATO Member States in Ukraine will deter 🇷🇺. Strong agree. 👍

CIA prepares for biggest mass firing since 1977. Few got fired for torture/enhanced interrogation. Many will be fired for recruiting efforts. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/20/u...

“In private, Republicans talk about their fear that Trump might incite his MAGA followers to commit political violence against them if they don’t rubber-stamp his actions. “They’re scared shitless about death threats and Gestapo-like stuff…””

Opinion | The last 80 years have brought unprecedented peace and prosperity to the US, Canada, and Western Europe. It's time that we ended it.

Tomorrow, on Friday, at Yale university with @holgerroonemaa.bsky.social and @michaeldweiss.bsky.social we will tell about our recent investigations on Kremlin influence operations in the Baltics. The event will be on Zoom too. Register here. macmillan.yale.edu/europe/event...

Europeans have vastly different takes on Russia and China • Views of Russia are mostly negative; nearly half of Europeans see Russia as adversary with which they are in conflict • Views of China appear nuanced; same share of Europeans (~40%) see China as either necessary partner or rival/adversary

Two Ukrainian oppositional leaders: Petro Poroshenko and Yulia Tymoshenko (both hate Zelensky and hate each other) have publicly supported Zelensky, said his term prolongation is legit until the end of the war, and said elections are impossible now. Listen to Ukrainian opposition.

😆😆😆

General mood.

Waiting for the end of the Trump presidency is not strategy, it’s a dereliction of duty. American actions aside, Europe’s own interest is in developing its own defence. We do not have the oceans as buffers; we’ve always been in the thick of things! Less outrage, more action!

Trump falsely claimed that Ukrainian Pres. Zelensky’s approval rating stands at a mere 4%. Experts at U of Manchester point to polling which puts Zelensky's approval rating at 63% - the most popular politician in Ukraine.

Trump says he isn't concerned about Russia because the US and Europe are separated by a big beautiful ocean. He really needs a globe.

"Canada is well positioned — with more soft power and diplomatic capital than almost any other country — to wield anti-corruption as a weapon that leverages pressure against Trump’s destructive tariffs and anti-democracy agenda. You have the tools. Use them." thetyee.ca/Analysis/202...

Government’s wins are often invisible: Systems that avoid plane crashes; alliances that avert war; surveillance that prevent pandemics. Government wins are often *the avoidance of loss.* So how do we tell the story of the destruction of government? The story of future losses *not* averted?

I suspect Trump's "peace through weakness" policy will not work as intended.

Without going all Martin Niemöller here, I do think that it's bad not to speak up for immigrants, transgender Americans, civil servants, women, Ukraine, and everyone else the MAGA bullies are going after. We're beyond picking and choosing whom to defend. It's time to stand up and speak out.

And who can disagree...

It's grim, but we're a rich continent with big strengths, and defending Ukraine and the rest of us against ageing, corrupt, sclerotic Russia is essential and eminently doable.

Von der Leyen is giving a properly powerful and defiant speech at the Munich conference. Call to action and arms for the European States and says that Ukraine's accession to EU will be sped up. A definite broadside against US appeasement of Putin, too. She's knocking it out of the park.

I wrote this in July, with great discomfort. I wish it were now irrelevant. But we are heading for dark times at horrifying speed. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
