It’s mind boggling that, in the year 2025–at a time of rising authoritarianism and a mayor threatening to use police to help mass deportations—the New York Times has an entire article about an NYPD staffing “shortage” without a single critical voice. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/26/n...

Musk called DOGE “maximally transparent,” but it has refused to release info about its spending and operations — including the names of its employees. ProPublica has identified 46 of them, including 12 new names we've just added.

“Psychoanalysis is no way of life. We all hope our patients will finish with us and forget us, and they will find living itself to be the therapy that makes sense” Winnicott.

Mayoral candidate @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social is calling for an investigation into whether Adams struck a deal that violates city law & is encouraging city officials to ignore Adams’ directive. “Eric Adams has narrowed the focus of city government to a singular goal: keeping himself out of prison.”

"The best study on the subject in my opinion suggests that in the long term, institutions really can’t save us; that civil society and mass mobilization are a more potent check on a backsliding democracy in the long term..." meditations-in-an-emergency.ghost.io/the-nature-o...

They are who we think they are

@hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social @schumer.senate.gov @kenmartin.bsky.social You slow things down, you put up a fight. You rally the people. All this “we are powerless” talk is demoralizing. We know who controls Congress, the White House. But if we wanted you to roll over and play dead, we’d get a dog.

Interesting the extent to which organized labor has led the fight back against the DOGE shutdown efforts while elected Democrats have been almost entirely passive and useless.

I am really frustrated that the press is discussing the destruction of USAID as something that has happened rather than an illegal action that will likely be undone in two weeks when courts tell the world that it was illegal.

“What Mr. Vance gets wrong is that the point of Christian teaching is to expand, even transform, our order of loves.” ie that limiting them to the in-group is not a virtue (qv Luke 10:25–37)

There is no platform or venue worse for hosting political discussions than social media. If you're not a political operative, activist or journalist, it's a complete waste of your time

This Fiona Apple narrated explainer PSA on how to film (and release footage from, not livestream) ICE arrests is exactly what we need from people with production skills right now and is worth about 3 million celebrity “imagine” covers in terms of survival utility

Incredible to see a political party so addicted to losing and fucking over their base

JB Pritzker flat out says the birthright "order" is unconstitutional and "we will not obey an unconstitutional order," attacks Trump for having the oligarchs in the front row. See, @schumer.senate.gov? It's not that hard!

Hundreds of prisoners are fighting dangerous wildfires in CA 🚒 Incarcerated workers perform vital jobs across the US & contribute billions to our economy, but they are paid very little ($0.13-$0.52/hr on average)—if at all—and have almost no labor rights. www.epi.org/publication/...

You don't hear this called out often. But it should be. Appreciation to @mulagostarr.bsky.social for doing so. Funders holding themselves and their grantees accountable would also force right-sizing of grants and inclusion of dedicated M&E/impact analysis $ as needed. ssir.org/articles/ent...

The Palestinian people in Gaza deserve to celebrate. The Palestinian people in Gaza deserve everything from the world. We owe them everything. Those of us outside of Palestine must continue organizing and demanding an end to Israeli apartheid and occupation. Towards liberation.

"America and the world need a new generation of community builders. A generation defined not by age but by spirit—by a fierce, unyielding commitment to each other and a clear-eyed, full-hearted recognition that we are kin, not enemies and that we fundamentally need each other."

From New York Public Library today--86 holds on Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower. Reassuring to know others are preparing themselves in this way.

This meta-analysis found that both direct and indirect psychotherapy interventions led to significant reductions in suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. ja.ma/4fFk0lg

Utterly horrifying. 96% of children feel death is imminent 92% of children are not accepting of reality, 87% display severe fear, 79% suffer from nightmares, 77% of children avoid talking about traumatic events, 49% of children wish to die because of the war www.warchild.org.uk/news/war-chi...

The conservative media landscape is exceptionally well-funded. Wealthy donors, PACs, and corporations with a vested interest in conservative policies give figures like Bari millions in no strings attached funding in order to control the independent media ecosystem and push reactionary politics

The new generation of young, diverse, fired-up worker-organizers around the country are embracing one of the oldest tactics in the pro-union handbook: salting. My latest for @teenvogue.bsky.social: www.teenvogue.com/story/what-i...

This is an important story but I think it underestimates what @viscidula states: nytimes.com/2024/12/30/hea… “If you look at what early intervention is, it’s not some miracle cure — it’s very, very high-quality, holistic, coordinated services,” Dr. Jones said.…”
