It’s not the popular thing to do, and there are reasons to argue against doing so, but I believe in the current environment we need to be outwardly appreciative (without fealty) of efforts by Republicans to help solve problems the administration creates.

This is a great story about how NSSL is partnering with the NWS to use Warn-on-Forecast to improve lead time for actionable tornado information. NSSL WoFS research would be seriously curtailed or ended under the OMB proposed NOAA budget. inside.nssl.noaa.gov/nsslnews/202...

How many times can I order something for pickup at Houston Center when I meant Allen Center?

I harbor no ill will toward UT at all, but I really wish that the TxDOT message signs said. CONES UP HORNS DOWN

We have one more decent chance of showers across SE Texas today before things quiet down a bit. @mattlanza.bsky.social has details on how much rain we've received this week, and more on what's to come, including our next rain chances:

Texas checking in tonight with the largest US hail recorded thus far in 2025. A mammoth 5.20" hailstone confirmed in Floyd County.

Had not yet heard about the translation service being reupped. Good news. The passback and budget for the future? Not good.

Whenever I get asked by a student if they should consider grad school, my answer to them is always “I would never tell you not to do it.” Because it isn’t for everyone, but it isn’t my place to say you should go. Every situation is unique.

Really interesting how the HRRR seems to be struggling with near term convection around Houston. It’s tough right now because you can’t tell if it’s spring doing spring things or missing weather balloon data.

The Blue Jays came to Houston in 2nd place in the AL East, got outscored 15-2, with the Astros batting .333. Not bad.

This is one of those stories that kind of sneaks under the radar that may become a tourist magnet for folks visiting Houston.

Let’s do this thing.

NJ’s Pine Barrens are one of the most wildfire-prone areas east of the Rockies. Why? (1) Lots of dense forest and brush, (2) sandy soils that dry out fuels fast, and (3) lots of people living nearby (90% of wildfires are caused by humans and our tech). The current drought makes it even worse.

Huge fan of #4 here. I love when older forecasters blame younger ones for being too reliant on models. Like they don’t have training too?

The PWHL has officially announced that an expansion franchise will be added in Vancouver for the 2025-26 season, the team colours will be Pacific Blue and Cream. Full story here: news.sportslogos.net/2025/04/23/p...

Is the sequel to “Conclave” going to be called “Convlex” or what?

What time will the dry microburst associated virga bomb hit my house?

Interesting case here today with the Euro missing. Terribly. An MCS over Houston. The total QPF doesn’t really do the miss justice. I’m not used to it missing an MCS complex, rather misplacing or mistiming it. And, oddly 3-5 day Euro forecasts were really good.

New YouGov/Economist poll out this morning finds Trump is no longer popular on immigration. This was the last issue he had a positive net approval on. This was very easy to see coming, esp bc individual components of immigration policy are so toxic: www.gelliottmorris.com/p/should-dem...

New Jersey is a disaster waiting to happen with the Pinelands. A pretty amazing wildland-urban interface over a huge area. Much of this was undeveloped when I grew up just south of here.

Pinelands wildfire in NJ. You get fires often there, but this sort of rapid growth is extremely uncommon.
